I know...or at least I think I want to leave where I am, but for some reason I keep questioning my decision...anyone else in (or been in) the same situation? How do I know for sure I'm making the right decision? I have a list of reasons why I should leave and they all make sense...
I'm determining whether to stay at Smith or app to Bates, what do you think I should do?

I am apprehensive! but i am not debating on whether i should leave! I know I have had enough here, and i want to go to my dream school since high school. that's why i am transfering :), but i am scared, because dartmouth doesn't accept many transfers, although i believe that i am a bright students, compare to Dartmouth students, i am just avg :(

Joyce, I guess Smith just wasnt the right fit for me, I don't really care for the all womens environment, its close to home, too liberal for me and a few other reasons. It's a great school, but just not for everyone. Do an overnight if you are considering it, I'm going up to Bates this month to do the same and make sure its where I want to be.

Anyone else? Prestige-wise any differences between Smith and Bates?

To OP: EVERYDAY. I've been questioning whether applying for transfer is the right decision almost everyday since August. I just tell myself that these are just applications, and only give me the option to transfer next year, and that nothing is definite yet. The hard decision will be at the end when acceptances come out...

Btw, if you're looking at Bates, I hope you're the outdoorsy-type, bec there is little to do in Maine.

Bates was a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere for my S, as a Katrina Visiting Student last semester, both by the students, the faculty and the administration. I would consider the two schools relatively equal in prestige. Among those who really know the college/University landscape, I believe they both have deservedly top reputations. OTOH, they both could generate quizzical looks on the part of the bulk of the general public, but I wouldn't care about that and suspect you wouldn't either. And while I have to agree with MightyMeals that there isn't much happening in Lewiston, the kids at Bates seem to make do very well. And I would NOT agree that there is little to do in Maine other than outdoorsy stuff - Portland is a hop-skip-and-jump, if you choose to avail yourself, and is a cosmopolitan perfectly-scaled city in just about every way.

For someone who is a die-hard urbanite, I don't think Bates would work any better than Smith, but I don't believe that describes the OP.

hey mighty meals...why are you transferring out of william and mary? i was thinking about applying there...

and to sara...if you're looking at bates, make sure you REALLY want to be in lewiston. i'm at colby right now, and while i do love maine and don't mind the outdoors, i'm ready to jump off the deep end. if you're apt to miss urban life even remotely, don't do it! that's my warning. and waterville, as horrible as it is, is better than lewiston. so i can't even imagine...
it's a good school though, so don't let me scare you. perhaps i'm more of an urbanite than i had initially though...

Don't worry you're not scaring me off...honestly I like the size of northampton, I can only stand big cities so long. But yeah, I've heard that Lewiston is crap--which sucks, but I guess my reasons for transferring supercede the town issue.

Mightymeals, Those look like good choices for schools. I will let you know in advance though that a few of my friends did overnights at Holy Cross--the students flat out dissuaded them from coming and before that was even said they decided it lacking in social aspects and the kids were waaaay too snobby and the campus was not diverse at all. Its a catholic school, so to me that didnt seem odd, but I would visit if I were you, just to be sure. I only have to reactivate my app to Bates because I applied last year and was waitlisted. So in short the essay end of it is going well.

I was thinking of only applying to Bates, what do you guys think of that? I think that its where I'd really like to be, and my visit will tell me for sure next weekend, but I'm still on the fence and can't think of another school that I'd like to go to. I have no idea what to do! I don't want a place as remote as williams, or midd. But I want something small and coed, suburban and not (I hate to sound snooty) lesser in rep than Smith. Any suggestions?
