Your format is incredibly intriguing kwu, but I'm going to use it anyways:

No, it doesn't.

Case disputed:

I'm still not sure what this type is, but there were some successful applicants with GPAs as low as 3.6 that were accepted, while other, more successful students (ahem, me) were waitlisted.

And what makes her qualified to post something like that? We can speculate all day long, but the bottom line is, she didn't get into Columbia.

OH SO ASIAN.

Don't forget the gunners and preprofessionalists. If I were to ask a Penn student to describe his school in 3 words, I'd probably get something along the line of "Oh, did you know we were ranked #_ on US News?" What is Penn all about anyways? I'm still not too sure about that one.

Aerialblue, it sounds to me like you're a bit bitter yourself, although I won't question it. The cultural identity of these schools is so dubious, though, so I'm going to leave your post alone.

I'm not bitter, because I didn't get into HYP, and that's the only mark that actually matters. Columbia/Brown/Penn/Dartmouth, who cares which one you go to; regardless, the HYP kids will never give you the time of day. Squabbling about the scraps is child-like and undignified.

To put it another way: A Columbia student looking down on a Penn student would only matter to the Columbian. People from lower ranked schools wouldn't be able to tell the difference, because they couldn't get into either. And HYP kids wouldn't even pay attention.

I think that's a great summation of the ethos at the so-called "middle ivies." Waitlisted excellence. Smart enough that it wouldn't have surprised anyone if you had been accepted to HYP, but not lucky/accomplished enough to pull it off.

For the record, I was a very interesting applicant. Everyone who read my essay was impressed, and I had a top leadership spot in a really impressive area, which I can't divulge. (It's google-able and would reveal my identity). I have no idea why Yale wasn't interested. Tough cookies for me. Columbia, I don't care about.

^Do you even read what you write? How can I possibly be bitter about anything when I didn't write about getting rejected from a school I thought I was good enough for. Your posts in this thread contribute nothing, and you talk more about yourself rather than give the OP any constructive advice beyond "Go for it."

And how the hell did you get to talking about HYP? Did I ever imply that Penn was objectively worse than Columbia/Dartmouth? Clearly, we have a case of sour grapes here.

read aerial's post before mine sherlock. you sound quite bitter and have the audacity to say HYP is soooo much better than columbia in a freaking CU forum.... harvard is overrated, princeton is in jersey, and yale produced George W.

That's not me, that's a kid from Rice who found my username amusing and copied it. I found out when someone pm-ed me, and I had the moderators ban him months ago.

He really did hate Columbia, though. Guess he got burned?

aCTyankee, you sound far more irrational than I do. Columbia might be an excellent school, but it loses the cross-admit battle to Dartmouth, let alone HYP.

Excuse me, you are correct. What I meant was Brown; 56% of those admitted to both will choose Brown. For Dartmouth and Penn, 55% and 59%, respectively, will choose Columbia.

That's pretty close, if you ask me. I'm sure in the last 5 years that data has gotten even closer.
