This is my answer to a question somebody sent me about rushing as a sophomore transfer. Figure it might be worthwhile to more than one person.

Happy to help. No, it is not uncommon at all. You will be able to rush, but will have less time to make an impact; it is a common conception (at most schools) that transfers are usually people that couldn't fit in at their old school, obviously not always true and means nothing if you are in fact a great guy, but it's a thing to note. Many people make great first impressions, which obviously negates this entirely, and end up making really good friends with the guys in houses and join. We have a couple, DKE has possibly 2 (one may have graduated), KA has one these days. Those are the only three I know of for sure; I know Sigma Chi and Beta also have some, but I know a lot less about those guys. This applies to top tier houses, the others are likely much easier and probably don't care as much. Also, knowing people in the house will obviously immediately raise your chances. I guess one last comment is that you will probably pledge with that year's class, even if your better friends are your age. Can be a little weird during pledgeship, but after that it's back to normal.

Sororities as a whole care a lot less. Plenty of transfer girls get into the better sororities provided they fit the mold, although even then, there is just a little bit of skepticism at first.
