Transfers: Res Hall vs. Arroyo Vista

Ok, so im a transfer student with the option to stay in a res hall. Im trying to figure out what life in Arroy Vista is like, vs what life in the res halls are like. I want a fairly social atmosphere with stuff going on, and more opportiunities to meet new people, however I dont wanna stay in some ghetto place and I also like how Arroyo Vista is closest to the ARC (Important as a I frequent the gym a lot). I guess it comes down to this: If i go to AV, will there still be chances to meet a lot of new people and socialize and meet members of the opposite sex (Because Ill know absolutely no one there when I go there)?

First off, the residence halls come with a meal plan while Arroyo Vista does not. What this would mean (other than one being much more expensive than the other) is that in AV, you’d lose the chance to use the dining commons as another way to socialize with your hallmates. Sometimes it’s nice to go as a hall and just have a great time eating and such.

As far as social events go, I can’t say much about AV because I lived there over the summer and not during the academic year. But it really does depend on what you make out of it and all. Just keep in mind that the residence halls house more people so that does mean more chances, however I’m not sure if it would feel weird living with freshmen in the dorms the whole year. I’d probably go with AV and maybe use the ARC as a place to build friendships.

res hall is way more social.

but its freshmen.

AV is hardly social.

if yo udo AV, u will have to try harder to meet people.

its really easy in res halls but its freshmen and more expensive. (but closer to campus).

i’ve lived in av and res hall. i advise res hall if youre a 2nd year transfer. idk about 3rd+ bc theyre 2 years younger than you lol.

I’m still deciding to choose between Res. Hall & AV…

I’m afraid to pick Res. Hall because I have no idea how many transfer students will be living there

If there will be only few transfer students, it makes no sense for us transfer students to meet many freshmen even Res. Hall is way more social right? lol

ShoeFactory, do you mean AV is hardly social because of the fact that we don’t have the chance to dine with hallmates?

What I think is that AV has the transfer theme house, will it help us transfer students to meet each other better than living in Res Hall with many freshmen?

I think im quite leaning towards the middle earth res hall now (closer to social sciences and ARC) I mean itll be my first year at a real college and I wanna have the fun dorm experience and what not, and it seems like AV wont be the place for that.

Can anyone tell me if the AV houses do stuff as a house though, and is the entire house single sex or is it coed?

I just want to warn transfer students considering resident halls that the vast, vast majority of residents there will be freshman. You’re probably going to stand out.

If you’re ok with that, then fine. Personally, I would not be.

i already just signed up for the res hall because: it’s closer to campus, dining hall, and easier to socialize with people. it’s a little bit more expensive, but it’s not like we’re going to be living there for 2+ years.

i think it’s going to be one hall dedicated to continuing students/transfers. and, it’s not like first years are THAT much younger than transfers anyway.

you can socialize in AV, but theres no guarantee that your hallmates will be social.

I’m sure you’ll meet a couple, but many are standoffish and already have friends.

Depends on the hall and your ability to get people out of their shell.

On the other hand, res halls are MADE to get people to meet each other. If its an all cont students and transfers res hall, that would be great.

Yeah I applied for AV and the res halls. For me, there are good things about both places. AV is close to ARC and there is a transfer house so you would be living with people in the same situation as yourself. On the other hand, middle earth has a transfer hall so it would maybe be similar to AV. Also, the res hall is closer to campus and it’s an easier way to meet people. Does irvine let you pick which place you want to live if you applied to both or do they just pick one for you?

I was going to stick with AV but after I went on a tour to UCI today, I changed my mind a little bit…

AV looks fine from outside, close to ARC, and is cheaper than Res. Hall

BUT the major disadvantage is that AV is way too far from the campus so if you don’t mind riding bike it should be fine

On the other hand, Res. Hall is a lot closer to the the main building in the campus so you can just walk to your classes

One reason that I didn’t choose Res. Hall is because it’s more expensive and meal plan is included

Even Res. Hall has the transfer house, I still think there will be few transfers living there so that freshmen will be the majority

By the way, is this the first year UCI open Res. Hall for transfer?

If not, any transfer has been in this situation and want to share your experience?

since the deadline for the survey was extended, I think im gonna go down there and check it out for myself too and then make my decision.

Even though you might not have a dining hall in AV, you can still socialize…by chatting with people on the shuttle. That’s what I did and I got to know some of my hallmates better by sitting next to them on the ride to campus and back or even at the shuttle stop too. But yeah, I would go to Res Hall just because AV is close to the frats and sororities and unless you want to hear them party or practice for Song Fest nightly then you might want to stay at Res Halls.

Oh and AV has no mandatory “quiet hours” during finals week while res halls do…
