I'm a prospective SCA transfer and I was just wondering if any transfers have trouble getting letters of rec. I'm starting my first year at a CC so none of the teachers know me and I'm not sure how to work around that.

I didn’t have any recs and I got in. That said, I applied to a different school/major, and I’ve heard yours is very competitive. I’d suggest getting as close to your professors this semester as you can, and fast. The letters aren’t due until next Feb, so by the end of the semester they may love you and be willing to help.

I’d also talk to your USC counselor about sending recs from high school teachers who know you very well, especially those that have helped you in cinematic arts (if any). They may be willing to take those as well, even if you’re in college.

Also, think outside the box as far as influential adults in your life. Is there a pastor, coach, club moderator, someone who works where you volunteer, etc that could write you one? Any of these would have very different perspectives of you vs. A bio teacher, english teacher, and Spanish teacher that all say “she’s a very hard worker and participates a lot in class”.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the speedy response! :D

Do not need to send any recs to USC as a transfer if you’re just applying for CLAS?

Also, would it be bad to reuse the recs I sent in last time I applied? The three that my high school teachers wrote were actually very good and I honestly think they are what got me into NYU’s film school… I have extras, so maybe I should use them again? I know that the worst part of my app was my grades, not the recs, so I dunno. If not, I’ll just have to go with my college professors. :)

No, you don’t need them for CLAS (that’s where I got in :)). But I’m sure, if you have good ones, they would be very helpful, so if you can get them, do!

And I’m sure reusing the recs, especially if they’re good, would be fine. If you could get a college professor rec, though, that would just add tons of good, especially if you get a good gpa!

Okay, thanks for the advice. What does everyone else think?

By the way, did you transfer to USC after 1 or 2 years somewhere else?

I also used a letter of recommendation even though I applied to CLAS. Personally, I feel that it does come into effect in terms of the admissions people knowing more about you from a different perspective such as a professor. Also, keep in mind that it wouldn’t hurt to just include it.

I transferred to USC after two years at a four-year school.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the best way to get professors to know you is by going to their office hours!!!.
