Transfers

I quickly skimmed the topics in the forum, and saw that one person was also thinking of transferring.

Currently I am attending a college very close to Vanderbilt as a freshman since I applied and was waitlisted last year (a probable deciding factor was that I was an undecided major). As I still want to attend I am applying for a transfer.

However, like some of you, I am nervous about my chances of getting in. But I am nervous for several reasons. One is that my my high school record is competing against that of the incoming freshman class. I posted my high school stats in my profile, so feel free to check them out. And another is that my current college record my not be strong enough.

Right now I am in honors, and a part of Engaged Scholars, (which has several criteria to complete by graduation such as attending seminars, doing service learning projects, holding leadership positions, studying abroad, etc.). Beyond that I am in the badminton club and Theta Epsilon Tau (Student Prehealth Association). I did not become involved with my school as I was still trying to balance out classes and just being at college for the first time, and I fear that this will seriously hurt my chances.

I was more involved in high school with activities such as student council, journalism, and Beta Club, but those activities were spread out over the years.

And I do realize that my strongest weakness is my current grades. First semester was a hard time for me to adjust and my GPA suffered as a result. It is now a 3.0 because I had failed Calculus. All my other grades were high A's and B's, and my transfer credits from a summer program helped pull my GPA up. But I know that a 3.0 is most likely not going to cut it, especially since I do not attend a university with similar academic competitiveness (does it make a difference if I name my school?).

I am taking the class over this semester and will have the grade replaced on my transcript at the end of the semester. But I know it will still affect my chances as that F is still on my transcript. I am having midterm grades/estimates sent too, which is another source of worry for me. There are only a couple of grades available for some of my classes, and I have mostly received mid-range B's for them.

So I would like to ask for your honest opinions on my chances in getting in. I realize that it's pretty slim, but I would still like to hear different takes. Since I am so close to Vanderbilt and have friends that attend, I spend a lot of my time on campus and attending events (and I don't mean frat parties). I really like the student diversity and the atmosphere. My friends weren't into the party scene much, but we still managed to have a good time on campus nevertheless and I really value that.

Right now I am premed/prevet and a psychology major, with hopes of getting admitted to the College of Arts & Sciences. I also have a question: are transfer students permitted for intraschool transfers? The Human Organizational and Development major from Peabody seems rather interesting and I don't want to be "locked" to A&S majors if I change my mind and want to major in HOD instead. Double-majoring isn't a possibility for me since the requirements for premed/prevet are around 30 hours, and I do not want to graduate later than 2010 unless under unavoidable circumstances.
