You're trying to transfer in for your junior and senior years?

uh.....yes

I'm also going to be applying for transfer as a junior, next year (freshman right now in my second semester) . . . solely because I had a HORRIBLE first semester (only in terms of GPA and other cred) and decided another year at where I am now (University of Kentucky) would be necessary in order to build myself a tangible representation that shows I'm what Columbia would want. Apparently you're a Columbia student, Achilleus. Do you recommend against trying to transfer so late?

I mean, it's obvious that transferring after freshman year would be much better for anyone than doing it later (assuming that being at Columbia would prove to be a good thing at all for that particular person), but doing so would be IMPOSSIBLE for me (which is why I didn't post my current stats). Of course, my stats being as they are, it will be extremely difficult to get in next year, but I'm doing what I can.

Bump. I want to know what Achilleus meant.

It's not that I'm recommending you not do it, but I know a guy who just transferred here as a junior and the distribution requirements and core are kicking his ass. If you want to transfer late, make sure you're 100% set on a major and you have as many major credits to transfer as possible.

Columbia does allow double majors, doesn't it? I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do as far as a major, but if I settle on Biology like I might, I took no Bio classes my first semester and I have to retake a Chem class next semester, so that will set me back a bit. I'm considering double-majoring, because Biology isn't the only thing that strikes my fancy. I wonder how hard that would be.

You can double major, sure, but, as you probably know, Columbia has a pretty big core curriculum and you won't be exempt from most of it even if you've taken comparable courses. By the time you're a junior, you would need to really exert yourself to complete a double major. How many credits in the prospective majors do you have or plan to have after sophomore year?

Well, Im not sure what the other major would be. I might just minor in something else, like perhaps Philosophy which is fairly easy, or maybe English, depending on the minor requirements in English at Columbia, if I even get in. By the end of sophomore year I would figure I'd have about 18, give or take a few. I'm not even sure if credits work the same at different schools, but as far as UK goes, it will be about 18, if I do in fact stick with Biology. And of course this is if I do in fact make it into Columbia.

GPA university = 3.83
GPA university abroad = 3.6
GPA high school = negative
SAT's = 1320 (but I'm a junior in university now)
good essays, good rec's, plenty of REALLY good extracurriculars,
uhmmm, hobbies involve naughty naughty things.
what else... oh yeah, I killed a panda... and I dislike people and children (children aren't people!).

Think I have a shot? What about y'all? Nobody is posting any stats... kind of scaring me (probably because mine aren't so great?!).

PS: What's this "bump" junk you collegeconfidentionianians keep using in your responses? Is it a polite way of skipping over a previous person's question (because I think it might be easier (/more polite) to just not answer the question)? Or is it kind of like saying "I'm going to pretend like I ignored that last comment?" Anywho, explain...

Trying to transfer in as a senior? I don't even know if that's allowed.

nope, transferring as a junior. I'm just going to lose some credits from my year abroad

You said you're a junior now? As in starting senior year in the fall? What would you plan to do, repeat junior year?

kind of. I am a junior, but I have switched majors a bit. I can still transfer as a junior, because Columbia only transfer 60 credits, regardless. As I had a thoroughly unacademic high school career, I chose to study a year abroad for personal growth, not necessarily for credit. so yes, I will lose about a years worth of work... but that year was really meant to catch me up from high school. Oh, and I applied as an English major. What about you?

I'm a current first year at Columbia, probably going to be a Classics major.

"bump" revives a thread that someone thinks didn't get answered all the way

so, who has something interesting to say? Sure, anything regarding admissions is preferred... but as I'm stuck checking my email account along with this boring thread all day for info on my applications, minas well carry on a fun conversation. Hmmmm, I know, when was the last time you lied, and what was it (yes, this question is open to everyone)? Or is that Q too predicatable (and boring)? Do you all brush your teeth? Shower? If you could work for either Donal Trump or Martha Stewart, would you just commit suicide? Do you see yourself as a Belgian fry, a French fry, or a Freedom fry? Well, discuss... I'll check back in about five seconds (I'm sure!). Oh, by the way, "BUMP!" I know I didn't really use it properly, but whatever! I'm sure I also misused most of those big SAT vocab terms I threw into my transfer essay...
Well, I hope someone responds.

"minas well?"

Oh dear.

yes hunny?
