I am currently a senior in engineering here at UIUC and will be applying for grad school here in the spring. I am wondering whether you typically have a better chance getting into grad school coming as an undergraduate from the same university? Or, if i should consider also applying to other schools?

What's your engineering major and GPA? Some grad schools discriminate against their own undergrads in admissions, but I don't think UIUC is one of them. You might get a slight edge because your recommendation letters will come from professors who are colleagues with the admissions committee, if they aren't on it themselves. On the other hand, UIUC has top graduate programs in nearly every field of engineering, so it would be unwise to only apply to one school.

Some (not all) people frown on the idea of doing grad work in the same place you got your ugrad degree. Since uiuc has such a strong program though, it creates a compelling reason to want to stay at least. I would definitely at least look into other programs though, particularly for the reason im_blue already mentioned.
