Transportation & Accommodation around Terre Haute

I'm basically set on attending Rose Hulman...but I have a few concerns before I commit...one of those being transportation and accomodation..

I've realized that in order to get to Rose Hulman, I have to fly to Indianapolis first and then take the greyhound to Terre Haute...is that correct?

Also, what about the transportation in Terre Haute itself, is a car a necessity or is there a local bus??

And..about the accommodation...I will not be able to afford to stay in the residence halls...does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives that aren't too far from campus..?

Usually there should be carpools/rides that you can take with other students.

For some of the big days (like our freshmen week of welcome) RHIT will arrange rides once we submit flight information to them.

In Terre Haute, I don’t recall there being any bus, so most likely you’ll need a car. Even more so if you’re living off-campus.

Regarding off-campus accomodations…I wouldn’t know.

The school will provide a ride to Rose from the airport at the beginning of the year. You should get something in the mail as it gets closer to move in asking for you flight info so they can arrange a ride. For breaks they have a shuttle service that costs $15 each way, or you can find someone to drop you off at the airport since lots of people drive right past the airport on their way home. You can have a car your freshman year, but it isn’t necessary. There will always be someone on your floor going to Walmart or the bank, so you’ll be able to get a ride. Freshman year you are required to live on campus unless you live with family. You really get a lot out of living on campus, as you will find, including making tons of friends. After freshman year many students live off campus, and there are at least three apartment complexes within three miles of Rose that are cheaper than on-campus housing, however they do not include a lot of things like utilities, cable, internet, housekeeping, and activities.

As far as local buses, when I was visiting, I saw exactly one bus there. Anyways, the Terre Haute website says there is a bus route on Wabash Ave. and that they will take you to Rose on request.
