transportation at Tulane

does anyone know what it is like getting around New Orleans? Do you think you need a car?

The street car line that runs down St. Charles to the French Quarter runs right by the front of Tulane. You really do not need a car.

EDIT: Also, Tulane provides shuttle service to Target (& the adjoining mall) and Whole Foods every weekend.

S just graduated from there. He ended up taking his (very very old) car down there at the end of his sophomore year. However, he didn’t have the streetcars available for nearly 2 years due to Katrina. They are now running again.

During that period of no-streetcars, there were some public buses that came by and of course, the cabs which are everywhere. But he really wanted his car to go to the grocery stores, etc. It’s kind of ironic, but this past year he lived 2 blocks from campus and only had to fill his tank twice all semester :)

I would think you can definitely get by without a car now that the streetcars are running again. It’s nice to have one, but parking can be a pain and is very expensive on campus.

Lived there 4 years without a car, and didn’t suffer from not having one at all. In fact I am convinced that having one is more hassle than not, but just MHO.

There are two main modes of transportation from Tulane (other than the shuttle). The St. Charles Ave. streetcar, which everyone knows about, and the Freret Street bus, affectionately known as the “Freret Jet”. Both of these can get you to downtown, while the streetcar going the other way can get you to Camillia Grill and that area if you don’t feel like walking. Also both of these can get you to connecting bus lines if you need to get to other parts of the city or suburbs. But for 90+% of what you want, things are either walking distance or accessable via these two routes.

For getting to the airport, there is an airport shuttle, or share a taxi with one or two others and the price is reasonable.

Thank you so much for your help!
