Transportation Between Rollins/Orlando

Can any Rollins parents or students comment on the transportation situation around Rollins? Is there public transportation available to Orlando? S just got accepted and will not have a car on campus for at least 2 years.

While we're at it, how do people feel about the size of the school? Does it ever start to feel like high school?

Thanks for your help!

My S attends and has his car this year. There is a bus system but I gather it is not that great. I know some people use it to go to Disney or other places but it definetely takes alot longer. For freshmen year my S and his friends generally shared a cab or they went with someone who had their own car. It is not too difficult to find someone to help out and your S will probably make friends with enough people that he can catch a ride to the airport or around town.

I understand that they are now going to be offering free shuttle services from the campus to Winter Park Village on Fridays from 6pm to midnight. That is where S and his friends spent alot of time as there is a movie theater, restaurants and shopping there.

S likes the size of campus but probably will feel the small size by the time he is a senior. Junior year alot of students go abroad so that will be one factor in his surroundings. For my S the size was not a factor, in fact he likes the size of classes and Rollins doesn’t have huge lecture halls.

Thanks SweetTea! On our visit, S was really attracted to the small class size (the rooms with conference tables, especially). But it would be impossible to have those small classes with a large school population. Decisions, decisions.

I am a current freshman, and I use the public transportation all the time.

Walgreens, Chipotle, Taco Bell, and a few other fast food places are all about a mile down the road. Students walk to them often, as well as up and down Park Avenue.

Rollins does now offer a free shuttle every Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight to Winter Park Village. From there, students can easily get to the movie theater, Publix, K-Mart, and a variety of other stores and restaurants (though most close around 10 p.m. on Fridays).

I have a Disney pass, and I use the LYNX buses often to get there. There is a bus stop a five minute walk from campus. Buses arrive approximately every thirty minutes. It takes about thirty minutes to reach the central station in downtown Orlando. From there a person can go anywhere - international drive, the outlets, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Disney Parks, the malls, etc. I believe there is even a bus to Tampa that costs a little more money. An all day pass is $5, and a trip one way is $2. Transfers are free. The bus rides are annoyingly long (it takes about two hours for me to get to Disney), but the $2 is much cheaper then the price of a car plus insurance and gas.

Many other students on campus have cars as well, and students often split cabs to go different places as well.

The size of the campus is perfect in my opinion. I have never had a class over thirty people and know many students, professors, staff, and administration well. Everyone is friendly; I have even talked to the President a few times at different events.

The “conference tables” are a great aspect of the college; I have had three classes in the room they showed me on my tour with the giant oak table. They help with discussion and make the classroom feel much more like a class than a lecture.

You do get to know a lot of people; I can rarely leave my dorm without running into someone I know. At the same time, college, like anything else, is what you make of it. There are many people in my residence hall that rarely leave their rooms and do not get involved in much. The biggest thing I have learned over the last few months is that Rollins has everything you could want; you just have to be willing to take the initiative to go get it.

One thing I remembered is that there is a bike loan program and that is a great way to see the area and get exercise.

The LYNX net seems large. How about transportation from Camus to supermarkets like Walmart and so on? Cause I could benefit from a nearby supermarket to buy many things I could need.
