I will be leaving CPW outside the window of MIT's free shuttle services.

I'm looking up the directions for how to get to Logan airport from MIT, and it is confusing me. It appears that I need to get on a "red line" and then a "silver line." Are these buses/subways or both? How close are the bus/subway stations to MIT's campus?

Can someone please explain this to me in great detail? (I am not accustomed to public transportation).

The red line is a subway, the silver line is a bus route. The entrance to the red line is on the edge of MIT’s campus. When you are ready to leave, have someone point you in the direction of the Kendall Square T stop. Go through the inbound entrance (the outbound entrance is across the street). Buy a ticket using the machine (pretty self-explanatory, around 2 dollars). Get on the train, ride it until South Station, get off. Wander around until you find the silver line entrance, get on the bus, get off at Logan airport.

There are 2 red line stations really close to MIT (Kendall and Central Square). From there, go toward South Station, where you can switch onto the Silver Line.

I think if you use google maps, type MIT as a starting point, Logan Airport as a destination point, and select “By public transport”, it’ll give you some pretty specific directions for getting to Logan using the subway and/or buses.

MIT is served by Kendall/MIT station, which is a subway station on the Red Line. The stop is located at the northeast corner of MIT’s campus (see the [campus map](http://whereis.mit.edu), and look for the “T” in a circle at the upper right corner). It’s very close to the academic buildings and several of the east-side dorms, and is a bit more of a hike from the west-side dorms (although there are several campus shuttles that run around campus every day and stop at Kendall).

Once you get on the Red Line heading inbound (toward Boston), you will get off at South Station. There, you’ll follow signs to the Silver Line SL1, which is a bus that travels on a private, partially underground road to Logan Airport. The bus will take you directly to your terminal at the airport.

This will cost $2. There’s no charge for switching to the Silver Line from a subway train.

I will note that if your host turns out to be across the river (i.e. in certain fraternities, sororities, and independent living groups), you may want to get on the Green Line, not the Red Line. If this happens, make another post and people will help you understand where to go. Regardless of who your host is, they will probably also be happy to go through how to get to the airport from wherever they live with you.

Getting on the Silver line from the airport is pretty idiot-proof - just look for the big ‘T’ signs (there’s a gigantic T inside a circle). There are also MIT-run shuttles from the airport to the MIT campus that you’ll find out about in your CPW info packet thing.

Easy way: grab a cab from in front of the Marriott hotel in Kendall Square (right by the subway stop). Roughly $30 fare and you won’t get lost. =)
