Transportation - From NorCal to SD

I currently live in the Bay Area, which is about 10 hours away from UCSD by car. I'm wondering, for current students at UCSD whose residence is in Bay Area(or in NorCal), what is the best/cheapest way to get home? Do you guys take a bus, train, airplane ride, etc.? How much does it cost you?

The only reason why my parents are reluctant to allow me to attend UCSD is because of the distance, and also because they still think I can get into Berkeley(lol). I really would love to go to school in San Diego, so I would appreciate any help.

i lived in sacramento, had a car starting from my 2nd year at ucsd. i’d drive during winter and summer break, but took southwest the rest of the time. if you book in advance (and you should, because it’s cheap and there’s no cancellation fee) you can get pretty cheap tickets.

you can always find a ride home for the long weekends if you’re willing to chip in for gas money.

Southwest. The tickets are cheap as ****.

^ Southwest fosho. I also live in the Bay Area and Southwest has really cheap flights if you book them a couple months in advance. I havn’t had a problem yet with their flights.

and no baggage fee !!!

Southwest baby! And if you book it advance you can get tickets for very cheap. Or, if you have the connections you can drive home with friends who go to UCSD, UCLA or any other neighboring university.

How much are the tickets usually? Are they in the sub $100 range one way?

From $49 to $200 each way. (SFO-SAN)

Thanksgiving Day 2010 I paid $270 (Total )
Winter Break 2010 I paid $165 (Total)
Long weekend in January 2011 I paid $69 (Total)
Spring Break 2011 I paid $49 (only one way)
