Transportation From The Midwest

hey, so i live in chicago, and i am most likely attending NEU fall 08. my dad did a little looking online for the cheapest airfare since there will probably be several flights a year from chicago to boston. he found the cheapest to be southwestern airlines ($99) to either manchester, new hampshire or providence, rhode island; assuming a charter bus or something along those lines would account for the couple more hours of driving to boston. thoughts on this plan? is there even a bus i could take?

does anybody else have any suggestions, comments, whatever regarding constant travels between the midwest and boston?

justie,
Southwest sometimes offers that 99 rate but not all the time. Transportation from those airports to NEU could be difficult. What about getting a credit card that offers airline points? Could your family use the card for purchases (paying it off every month) to try to rack up some points?
My child is at NEU and we are across the country. Truthfully he only comes home for Christmas and any summer breaks. There isn't constant travel the way you mention.
For Thanksgiving he has always gone home with a friend who lives in New England.

well yeah, i think that when i say constant, really i only mean thanksgiving, christmas and spring break probably. and we do have one of those mileage credit cards which we have also talked about using, but we were trying to check out all the possible options. thanks for the info!

I always just fly into Logan. It's a little more expensive but if you fly during crazy hours (I'm doing an 11:30 pm in a few days, I get to boston at 5 a.m) then it's not too bad.

Also, it's true what people have said, you don't fly back and forth that often. I don't come home for Thanksgiving or Spring break, so I just fly home for winter break, and then to visit over summer.

Hi Justie2505~Congrats on your acceptance to NEU. My daughter is currently a freshman there and we live just outside of Manchester, NH. It takes a little over an hour to get to Boston from Manchester. There is a bus you can take from either Manchester or Nashua which will bring you to South Station(Boston) where you can take the subway to campus. You would probably need to take a taxi to the bus stations in NH. If you time it well tho, you could probably get a ride to the NH airport from one of the many Southern NH students at NEU!

Manchester: There is a free shuttle to and from RIGHT OUTSIDE the airport to Sullivan Square in Boston, right on the Orange Line, from which you can get to NEU's Ruggles Station.

Providnece: To get to Boston, you'd have to take a bus from the airport (local RIPTA bus) to Providence Station where you'd get a Boston commuter rail train right to Ruggles. However, there will be a train that goes directly from the airport to Ruggles and South Station.... in 2009/2010. It will be VERY convenient for NEU students when it's built.

Boston: If you book far enough in advance, you can get great fares into Logan.

Thanks for all the info. We always just use airlines that go into Logan to avoid the hassle. I didn't know about the shuttle from Manchester. Are you saying the train will be running in 2009/2010? That will be great....hopefully it will stay more on schedule than the Big Dig!

Yeah, they started groundbraking awhile ago, and all they really have to do is build up this track so that trains will be able to stop between Providence and Kingston. I think it should stay on schedule; the bureaucratic holdups have been cleared away, and that's usually what messes up rail projects.

The Manchester Shuttle is a well-kept secret. We were expecting it to be packed when we went up three weeks ago. Three other people both ways. It's a lifesaver when you need to get to the area last-minute, especially!

justie2505:: I'm from chicago too! what school do u go to?

i'm not actually from chicago, just the surrounding 'burbs. i go to Buffalo Grove High School. but i would be flying out of ohare or midway, therefore i said i was from chicago.

my daughter did the Southwest flight from Manchester..caught the bus from South Station. It was about 1/3 the price as US Air . We used to have the option of cheap flights from Airtran, but they don't seem to have any direct flights to and from Philly.
Southwest was easy and a nice airline to fly with. We will make a point to go this way again.
