Does anyone know anyway to get to berkeley from the LA area other than car/airplane? it would be better if it gets there in a resonable amount of time too…around 7 hrs?

you could try to Greyhound it, although I suspect it would take a little longer than you would like...cheap, though.

Other than that, try Caltrain or there's always good old-fashioned hitchhiking!

Greyhound from L.A. to Oakland ($43 one-way)
7 hrs - 11 hrs travel time, depending on stops along the way.
The 7 hr. express bus only stops in North Hollywood and Coalinga Junction.
Though the website quoted a $43 one-way fare,
it's best to contact Greyhound or a travel agent for accurate info.

Amtrak from L.A. to Oakland/Berkeley ($48-67 one-way)
Amtrak is a little complicated, because there are no railroad tracks that go all the way from L.A. to Oakland or Berkeley. For example:

train from L.A. to San Luis Obispo

bus from SLO to San Jose

train from San Jose to Oakland/Berkeley

$48 one-way ... 11 1/2 hours

bus from L.A. to Bakersfield

train from Bakersfield to Stockton

bus from Stockton to Sacramento

train from Sacramento to Berkeley/Oakland

$67 one-way ... 9 1/2 hours

Again, consult Amtrak or a travel agent.

i know you said no airplane, but looking at the $67 one-way amtrak prices... southwest airlines' "fanfare" lax-->oak one way is $63.00 (i assumed ~april 1). after taxes and airport fees and security fees, it'll probably come out to slightly more than amtrak...but [probably] more convenient.

karthikkito, I am assuming that sleepybunny might have a phobia about flying, doesn't live near an airport or may not have access to a car. sleepy has been slient since the original post. WAKE UP, sleepy!

thanks for all your suggestions guys!

It seemed like the airplane fare is not that much more than bus after all...

Thanks, everybody!

if you book early through southwest u can get one way LA-OAK or SJO for $39 if u book 14 days or 21 days in advance depending on the current promotion right now it is $63 as karthikkito posted. hust depends when ur booking

*just not hust

The easiest way is to go on craigslist.org and hitchhike. It saves the most money and makes the most sense.

just take the freakin CAR ! ...

It's a pretty straightforward drive, but by the end of it your windshield will be covered by dead bugs. Better to just fly. You'll pay $20 extra for a quick trip.
