I was just admitted to UMD and live in New York and currently have a cousin who lives in NY and attends UMD. I believe she does get home by taking a bus. I'm pretty sure there's also a train pretty close by you can take to NY which is both much faster and more comfortable (but more expensive). And, of course, you can always drive if you have a car and a license (but the train is still faster).

There's an AMTRAK station at New Carrolton, about 10 minutes east from College Park, which shoots you straight up the east coast into grand central station in about an hour or two.

hey, thanks for all the responses. i was wondering, however, how much more expensive this train is, and if that the AMTRAK station at new carrolton only takes students?...

thanks again!

I live on the Island.

The cheapest, complete way to get from UMD to Long Island is as follows:

-Take the UMD Shuttle to the CP train station.
-Take the Metro to the Chinatown stop.
-Take any of the numerous buses from DC Chinatown to NYC Chinatown. The buses will normally drop you off at either Penn Station or at 88 East Broadway. If you can, try to get dropped off at Penn.
-Take the LIRR from Penn on your line to the closest train station.
-Have parents/friends pick you up at train station.

The only thing you have to watch out for is the time you leave. Metro only runs until certain times at night, and the UMD Shuttle service doesn't function on the weekends.

The Metro ride normally costs about $2.15 depending on when you ride.
A roundtrip ticket from DC - NYC - DC runs $35. A one-way ticket runs $20.
LIRR varies, but will range from $6.75-$10 depending on Off/On Peak and what line you're taking.

Roundtrip total normally adds up to about $60. The trip normally takes 20-25 minutes for the metro, half hour to wait for the bus (get there ahead of time) 4-4 1/2 hours on the bus, and then the time ranges coming home on the LIRR.

If you have friends/family in both locations with access to a car, and don't mind driving a bit, what you can do is the following by plane:

-Book an internet fare at Southwest.com
-Have friend/family drive you to Islip MacArthur Airpot
-Take plane from Islip -> BWI
-Have friend pick you up from BWI and bring you back to CP

Roundtrip it usually costs about $75-$80.

The flight is only about an hour, takes 20-35 minutes to get to BWI, and it depends where you live on the Island to get to Islip.

My friends have taken Amtrak, but normally it is considerably more expensive than bus/flight.

never take the bus. i can't imagine that you wouldnt be able to spend an extra 30 bucks on an airplane ticket to get home 5 times faster than if you took the bus. just put a dollar value on an hour of your time, and think about it.

i'm a big fan of the chinatown buses, and some students just cant afford the extra $30, especially if you go home relatively often. you can find out more at ivymedia.com.
the train from new carrollton to nyc is like $100. maybe more. it takes about 3 hours, but dont do it.

With a plane, you're supposed to arrive an hour earlier than the flight. Not to mention checking bags, security checkpoints, and all that good stuff.

Even though the flight is only an hour, you can easily add on another hour and a half to two hours as time just spent in the airport. So you're up to 2.5-3 hours right there. Then on top of that, you have to make sure you can have someone on both ends drop you off at the airports. Depedning on where you are, that's another half hour each way.

So the plane trip can actually take 3.5-4 hours.

The train trip takes 6 hours all told for me. $30 is quite a bit of money, and just not worth it for me, especially if you can afford to spend the extra time sleeping, reading, or studying.

i hear amtrak has discounts for college students if that helps... don't know details so im sorry can't offer better advice :)
