Transportation home from Pitt?

Hey guys, I had a quick question about transportation. My tour guide said that if you live in New York or Pennsylvania, Pitt has buses that will drop you off at certain destinations in your state. I live in between Allentown and Philadelphia, about 5.5 hours from Pitt, so this would be good for me if I wanted to come home for the weekend.

Can anyone tell me if there's any truth to this and, if so, give me a little more information? It's appreciated. Thanks!

I am only aware of buses for the Holidays.

If you want to go home on weekends, your best bet is probably Megabus.

Maybe she was talking about that (I was kind of zoning in and out of what she was saying). Do you happen to know where a Megabus picks you up at in Pittsburgh? Is it near the campus?

She definitely was. They mentioned it on my tour too.

It’s downtown at the David Lawrence Convention Center (in the underpass). Any bus will take you within about 3 blocks. I recommend not taking big luggage if you’re going to use Megabus as you will have to walk from your dorm to the city bus stop, climb onto the bus to get downtown. Get off the bus. And walk 3-4 blocks to the megabus stop.

Sounds simple enough. Thank you!

The cabs to and from the Megabus are not very expensive.

Megabus used to be at the Lawrence Center, but they were forced out earlier this summer. I understand the current Megabus pickup/dropoff spot is still downtown, about three blocks from the Lawrence Center.

It’s still at the convention center. They came to an agreement:

My daughter flies home sometimes. Does Southwest fly to Philly?

Megabus has a route from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia (but not Allentown). The Holiday bus home serves Philadelphia, King of Prussia and Allentown.

Thanks, QuietType.

My DS (Junior/P1 School of Pharm) arrived home(Rochester NY) last night safely via the Pitt bus. I can’t tell you how grateful we are for Pitt for having this program for the major breaks. Thought I’d bump this thread for new folks to our forum. Tribune had an article on it last week. H2P!

We are near King of Prussia and my son has used the buses home as well as Megabus to Harrisburg. I got $1 each way tickets on Megabus for winter break earlier in the fall so I booked the Megabus. Megabus cancelled service for Saturday so son was stuck in Pittsburghs. They had no availability for Sunday so he had to be scheduled on a bus home today! :frowning: I did end up getting him on a Greyhound to Baltimore and we picked him up there last evening but it was an awful Friday night/Saturday morning trying to figure out what to do especially since they are told to be out of the dorms by 1:00 pm on Sunday. So - long story short I will NEVER do Megabus for winter break again because if the buses home didn’t go he would at least have been with other students.

Yes, but I have to say, when I saw that Megabus cancelled service on Sat., I was hoping the buses home would reschedule (run by Coach/Lenzer who own Megabus?) for when the roads were cleared the next day. My dh had to drive the 1.5 hr drive to Allentown which took 2.5 hrs during that snowstorm to pick up our Pitt kids whose bus was 2 hrs late. The roads were very icy, lots of stranded cars and accidents.

@Amandakayak I agree it was bad on Saturday. My DS came home on the bus Friday and it was fine. His girlfriend came on the Saturday bus and it was a couple of hours late to Rochester. I was surprised they didn’t postpone until Sunday as they had done once his Freshman year because the weather in Erie was horrible. Thank goodness they all made it home safely!

Here’s a bump for new Pitt Parents (like me) who recalled something about chartered buses that run from Pitt to various East Coast cities.
My son just purchased his ticket for Thanksgiving break. For $95, I don’t have to drive 800 miles (400 per round trip) or pay for fuel & tolls. A bargain!
