Transportation method for Berkeley students?

This is a rather irritating concern that has cropped up recently. While Berkeley Time is great, 10 minutes often doesn't seem like enough time to go from one class to the other. I thought up of three main methods but each has its own flaws and shortcomings:

Bikes: I've pretty much given up on this one. In my opinion, undisputably the best way to get around. Unfortunately, it also comes with the big drawback: incredible (and I mean incredible) number of bike thefts. U locks aren't cheap and can't lock both wheels (unless you remove the front one every time, which takes too long). Cable locks are too easy to break. Getting two locks seems too expensive and a hassle.

Scooters: I don't see these around a lot. Hard to go uphill with them, and they seem too fragile. Also, it seems like most accidents seem to happen with scooters.

Skateboards: Man are these things hard to learn! Like scooters, it's hard to climb uphill. The biggest gripe I have with these is lack of brakes. Dragging your foot or tilting the board don't seem like very good methods.

Anyone have any ideas? Other possible methods of transportation? Right now I'm leaning towards getting a really old bike with a strong cable lock and hoping for the best but thefts are just amazing here.

I found a bike at our house that is older than me and you together and bought a lock that is worth more than the bike. No one has bothered it yet. My mom added a basket to the front so its nerdy looking, maybe thats why.

I skateboard sometimes but don't recommend it if you don't know how to skate. Too many hills and uneven sidewalks. And slow walkers.

You could get a motorized wheelchair.

A bike is a fantastic time-saver, especially if you live south of campus. I'm up in Bowles and despite the hills, it's still loads faster than walking (even while travelling northward).

I had my first bike stolen due to a crappy cable lock (do NOT use these except in conjunction with something better), but a sturdy u-lock will keep you safe. People don't really bother stealing seats and single wheels off cheap bikes.

Actually, I have had exactly that happen. The sad part is it costed more to replace the wheel than it did to buy my bike.

I agree that a bike is a fantastic time-saver, but theft seems too rampant here. I think a skateboard/scooter is a better idea (although I haven't seen very many scooters here).
