Transportation on Campus- Preference?

I'm an incoming freshman to UMDCP, and I was wondering if it was best to buy a moped, bike, or just walk to your classes? I'm a little afraid of being late to my classes, especially if they are back to back and on opposite sides of the huge campus. So what do you guys think?

Most people just walk from class to class. If you have situations where you really do have to go from one end of campus to another, you may find a bike helpful, but D did fall victim to having her bike tires slashed a couple of times while it was chained to the rack outside her dorm. :frowning: The athletes on campus (esp bball and football) were notorious for riding around on their scooters, but I think the new AD changed some (or all) of that…

Hoofing it is generally fine. A fair amount of people bike, that’s a decent option. Most people don’t use mopeds but that also works. Beware of traffic though, Campus Drive is a parking lot at certain times of day.

Have you registered for classes yet? My daughter’s advisor was good with telling her which classes were too far away (on foot) from each other to schedule them back-to-back. I would think all incoming freshman will get similar advice.

When registering, the system will flag places in the schedule where you may not have enough time to get to your next class on time.

Also check out TerpNav, it gives you the shortest walking path from one building to another:

To give you a time reference, its about a 15 min walk from Ellicott Hall to Susquehanna Hall with some pep in your step (about 20 min without). I am also sort of athletic, though I don’t think that means much.

I hate that athletes get freakin’ scooters. There suppose to be, you know, ATHLETIC!

My roommate had a bike and it pretty much means you can get anywhere on campus in five minutes compared to fifteen/twenty by walking.

I’ve heard the athletes just buy the scooters themselves with leftover money. Would love to hear a straight answer on that phenomenon.

^Pretty sure they do buy it on their own, but that’s not hard when everything else is getting paid for. The football team banned their players from using them now though after two incidents with their players getting hurt this past year. The way some of them drive on their scooter I’m surprised the Athletic Dept. doesn’t ban them for all athletes.
