Transportation Options for Northeast Corridor Students

I have heard there is bus transport to Phia train staiton and airport around holidays and long weekends. Anyone know how easy or difficut it is for students from the Northeast to get home?

Where in the NE?

For me, in Upstate NY, it’s a super easy 3.5 hr drive. I’ve already got it memorized - that’s how easy. 87 to 287 to 78, take the exit for Bethlehem and Lehigh Uni, turn right and follow that road, campus is off to your left once you’re in town.

I have a friend who lives in Allentown (Bethlehem’s next door neighbor) and he took a bus up last time he visited me. But the bus ride wasn’t a straight shot. He had to get off in NYC and catch a bus from there up here.

At the candidate’s day, someone asked basically your exact questions. There are buses that go directly to the Newark Airport, that I know for sure. Not sure about the train though.

Massachusetts - we could not find a train from Bethlehem, only from Phila, but I have been told there is a bus system to the train stations and airports. He will not have a car the first few years.

Hm. In that case, I’d say bus to NYC and train home then?

There are busses to Philly I believe.

copaman, FYI, if you’re going on 78, get off at Hellertown, go straight through the light at the end of the ramp, bear left around the turn, continue straight a 4 way stop, you pass goodman campus on left, make right at stop sign to go up over the mountain. follow signs. It’s easier that way, IMO, than going through town.

Eh. I don’t mind going through town. I know that way ;)

At the admitted students reception last week, we were told that there is a bus (charter I think) that goes from the Lehigh campus to the Newton/Wellesley area for around $130 round trip. It runs on a long weekend in October, Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks.

Thanks Mom, I will ask about it specifically when we are there next week.

If this helps, here is a bus line from Philly to Allentown and then you have a short cab ride to the campus. It leaves twice a day from Philly/Allentown.

Just a note: there is no train service in the Lehigh Valley.

My daughter attends college in western Massachusetts, and the only way for her to get from the Lehigh Valley to MA is through a Bieber bus caught in Hellertown. It goes to NYC, where she then catches a Peter Pan bus to NE. I don’t know how students would get to Hellertown, although it’s just minutes from the Goodman campus.

Students can catch a bus from the southside to Newark and/or Philadelphia (although not the airport in Philly.)

The BEST option for many is to fly to ABE (nominally in Allentown), the local airport, which has United, Delta, USAir, and a couple of other airlines flying out. Airfares are often cheaper through Allentown than through Philadelphia, although, of course, you almost always have to connect except if you’re flying to Chicago, DC, Charlotte, or (maybe) Boston. The airport is located about fifteen minutes from campus. Cabs are available.

My son attends Lehigh and we are from Mass. Last year, he took a bus organized from a parent from Muhlenberg college (a nearby college). I believe the parent is in the travel field.

The bus was a savior for us. The bus picked up kids directly from Lehigh campus and dropped them off in either Conn or Mass (I believe one bus went to NY but I am not sure). In Mass, the drop off was at a hotel in Newton. The cost was approx $125 round trip depending on the number of students who signed up. The bus was available for pacing break in Oct, Thanksgiving, Christmas break, and the spring break.

I can get the email address for anyone interested in this option for next year.

I got the email address re: the above post for the bus. It is bkrooster@aol.com

Approximate Driving times to Lehigh University from:

New York City

Newark Airport

Philly Airport

thanks

This all depends on driving style and time of day. Obviously if you’re heading towards Lehigh and you get caught in rush hour traffic full of people leaving the big cities you have listed, it’s going to take longer.

NYC: 1.5 hrs. (Can be done in 1.25)
Newark: can’t answer this one for you man, sorry.
Philly: Philly in general is ~1 to 1.25 hrs. Don’t know to the airport specifically.

Newark airport is right at rt 78; straight out to Bethlehem; probably an hour or so…ish
