Transportation options for visiting parents

This is a question for those of you who are coming in for freshman move-in. We're planning on flying into LaGuardia. I'd love to avoid renting a car there and driving it to Poughkeepsie. We'd love to catch the train out of Grand Central into Poughkeepsie and rent a car there. It seems, however, that the closest place to rent a car is in Newburgh at Stewart International. How are the rest of you doing this? It's twice as expensive to fly into Stewart or we'd do that. Ideas, anyone? Thanks in advance.

[MTA Metro-North Railroad](http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/enterprise.htm)

The MTA is partnered with Enterprise. There are places within Poughkeepsie you can rent a car. Most of them are clustered near IBM and not the train station but I’m sure some of them will drop the car off at the Station. Hopefully the link works.

kman, you are a lifesaver. I spent the better part of yesterday thinking I was going to have to take the train from Grand Central, get off at Beacon, catch a bus to Stewart Int’l - all with large amounts of luggage. The link worked beautifully - we’re all set!

I owe you.

For future reference…IBM Road is about 1 - 2 miles up Route 9 (often called the “South Road” in Poughkeepsie) from the Poughkeepsie train station (which is just off of Route 9.)

There are taxis at the Pok train station that could take you to one of the rental car cos on IBM Road. Just confirm taxi fare before you get in!

2boysima: Thank you - is there a taxi co that you have found to be more reputable?

As of a few years ago, there were only a couple of taxi companies. If they have the name of a cab company, and a real cab with the name of the company on the car, they are OK. Unlike NYC, there aren’t really any “car services” (legal or illegal) or people asking you if you want a ride.

Thanks, 2boysima. Those gypsy cabs are scary, let me tell you. One time, I took a boyfriend to NYC for a weekend. He’d never been, and we arrived at LGA, there were no cabs available, and one of those guys asked if we needed a ride. My BF, a small town guy, said sure, and I went ahead and went with it. Thank God nothing happened, but I was sure the whole trip that we were never going to be seen again. I don’t think I’d do it again, even though nothing happened and it was considerably cheaper than a yellow cab would have been.
