Transportation to Airport

My son is considering Ole Miss but one concern is the distance from the nearest major airport in Memphis. How do people deal with this? Any recommendations as to the best way to get to the airport and back?

The only shuttle I found that publishes prices online is the Bettie Bus, which apparently charges $125 each way! Anyone have experience with this service? Is there a cheaper option that is recommended?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

At the orientation, they stated that the school offers shuttles to and from the Memphis airport.

Call these folks (from the school website):

Excellent, thanks! I don’t know where I got the idea that the school didn’t have a shuttle.

Just wanted to post this in case anyone else has the same question I had.

I spoke with the Office of Outreach and Continuing Education at 662-915-5132. They said “it’s not a shuttle”, but the school owns several 15-passenger vans and they will drive you to and from the airport. There is no set schedule, but they will pick you up and drop you off at a time convenient to your flight. He said, “We won’t drop you off at the airport 4 hours before your flight and make you wait around.” When you’re returning to school, they will pick you up at the airport and drop you off at your dorm.

The service is not only for students, but for anyone connected with the university in any way, including parents.

The rates are $85 one-way and $135 roundtrip.

My D has used the school service often. Megabus has just started driving between Oxford and Memphis but she hasn’t taken it yet.

Some further info in case anyone’s interested:

I found out the school-owned vans will not bring you back to campus from the airport during Thanksgiving break because they’ll be on vacation. So apparently you have to use some private company for the return trip, and there goes the round trip savings.

Not terribly convenient!

Oxford has a Hertz dealership, so you can get a one-way rental from the Memphis airport to Oxford. USAA is an insurance group for current and retired military, but anyone can join. 18- to 20-year-olds who are members of USAA are generally allowed to rent from Hertz with no extra charges. Being a member of USAA is about the only way for a young driver to rent from Hertz, but it’s a simple work-around. Of course, this isn’t cheap, but for two or more students traveling together it may be cheaper than a shuttle.

Second, I remember taking a few guys to the airport back in the day. Your son will meet people who will be flying in and out of Memphis, and ought to be able to hitch rides, perhaps in exchange for a tank of gas.

Are there many students who don’t take a car to school? That’s the easy answer.

The simplest option we’ve found for getting to and from Oxford and Memphis Airport is through a local ground transportation provider. We’ve used Oxford Executive Transportation for almost 5 years! While they are more expensive than the university shuttle; they are a private car service that works round the clock, on the holidays and in most weather conditions. Every now and then we’ve been able to snag one of their specials (which they do run around the holidays and peak travel seasons) check them out at www.oxfordlimo.net
