Transportation

As incoming freshman, I'm worried about my mobility in college. Sure, I can afford myself a $5,000 lemon-- but the most concerned problem is that parking spaces in campus are NEVER available to freshman & sophomore.

Great. How can I move around the campus without depending myself to the bus? I'm seriously thinking about buying a skateboard...

Longboard or mountain bike, I prefer the latter. But there’s nothing wrong with a bus. Most college cities base their by around the campus so it’s vey conveinent.

Bike and lock, if you don’t want to ever bus it. Buses aren’t bad though. It’s actually helpful if you go to college in a hilly place and are too lazy to walk back up XD.

But why can’t you walk? Is your campus too spread out? My campus is 85% walker, 15% other (bike, skate, scooter). Buses are only for the out of the way dorms and buildings (everything else is a ten minute walk or less and by out of the way, I mean up the mountain- my school is on the edge of a valley).

Definitely the bike. It’s the best $400 I’ve ever spent. Not to mention, it’s:

Helped me lose over 60lb so I’m at my ideal weight (for my height) instead of morbidly obese.

Possibly saved me several hundred dollars worth of parking tickets.

Allowed me to get around in a more sustainable manner.

When I was a freshman, I wanted a car to make those occasional road trips and go a significant ways out of campus. However, after I got the bike, I realized that once I got used to it, I can often outdo the bus in terms of speed, and because lane-splitting is legal in California, I can even sometimes outdo someone driving a car because parking is rarely a problem for bikes.

Also, for most college campuses, the walk between classes is under 15min, so that shouldn’t be too bad.

As excelblue said, most college campuses should be compact enough so that walking is feasible. If not, bike during the warmer weather. When it’s cold, then yes, you can use other forms of transportation. I would not recommend bringing a car.

I have a car. Have had it since freshmen year. My parking lot is nearly a mile away from my dorm. Learn to love the bus system if you don’t want to walk or bike. Skateboards work too, I guess.

Honestly no one can really answer this for you since we don’t know what your campus is like. I feel like most campuses are small enough you can walk, and if they’re spread out you can use public transportation. If it were a campus you needed to drive in, they would have parking for everyone, you know?

If you want to do what most college students you, just walk. Take the bus if it’s far. Many colleges will give you a bus pass for free, mine does anyway. Bikes are cool too.

You also learn to live within the campus. Obviously it depends on your school, but for many schools, you kind of are in a bubble. Sure you can leave, but a lot will be going on on campus and in the immediate walkable area. I think most college students leave the campus area a lot less, and if you’re used to driving around a whole town or city, it will be different. The campus area should have everything you need, however, and you most likely won’t miss it :)
