Transportation

Does anyone know where i can take the train back to the bay area after orientation? I’ve heard that there’s a train that goes to berkeley and I’ll be able to take the bart from berkeley. Where exactly is the station?

You can take the Amtrak train back to the Bay Area. The Amtrak station is located in downtown, on 2nd street and G street, I think. To get there from campus, you can take the A line Unitrans bus, which will be free with your student ID (you will receive your new ID at the beginning of orientation). Here is the A line schedule; be sure to check the Summer & Break service (scroll to the bottom of the page) Unitrans | A-Line. The A bus drops you off at the Amtrak station, where you can then buy the train tickets, which ranges in price depending on what station you will be getting off. If you plan to take BART, I recommend taking a train that stops at Richmond; Amtrak and BART are at the same station there, so it is much more convenient, as opposed to the long distance from Berkeley's BART station and Amtrak station.

Hope that helped!

thank you so much!!!

there's actually a stop in fremont and san jose
i can just take amtrak directly without transferring to bart
thanks for our help! =)

If you want to save money, I would recommend taking the Davis-Berkeley shuttle and transferring to BART. It's about $7? to take the shuttle to UCB compared to the $18 off Amtrak =]. The downside is that the shuttle doesn't run on weekends and the latest bus is 2:30 PM. If you're interested, take a look at Berkeley Bus Reservations
- Questions? (530) 752-5023 - - Fleet Services - University of California at Davis . You can register 2 weeks in advance...the seats go FAST when it's a 3 day weekend!

You can also take Amtrak to Richmond, and go on BART for the rest of the way. My sister used to do that, but it's not that big of a difference for the price. So it's probably more convenient to just go all the way on Amtrak.

You live in Fremont?

thanks!
i used to live in fremont but i just moved to san jose recently

Oh, I see. Cool! I used to live in San Jose, but moved to Fremont. :)

did anyone take amtrak to/from Davis for orientation?
was it hard transferring from amtrak to public bus?
was it hard to find where you're going after getting off the bus?
i've only been to Davis once and i'm afraid of getting lost/late for orientation

Since we're talking about transportation, I'll just shove in my related questions in here:

I'm probably going to drive up there, so I'd like to know. ;]

do you guys know how to get from Davis back to San Francisco?

i think you can take amtrak

so did anyone take amtrak to orientation?
im kinda worried about not being able to find my place
is it easy to transfer from amtrak to the bus that goes to davis?
and where on campus does the bus stop?

the amtrak station in downtown davis is not far from the campus. I don't know where you need to go on campus but try this website Unitrans | Homepage for information on the bus system in town.
You can also plan trips in Davis on google transit Google Transit I put in amtrak, downtown davis, ca to UC davis and it gave me several choices for destinations on campus. Don't worry, you won't get lost - people in Davis tend to be friendly and helpful so just ask if you can't find your way. Have fun at orientation!

sutoroberrii, where are you coming from? driving from the bay area? Traffic on 80 is mixed. Somedays good, somedays horrid. Weekends often seem to have more traffic than weekdays. I've moved near Davis from Oakland and used to drive 80 to Davis on a regular basis. In Davis, watch out for bikes and pedestrians. Traffic isn't bad. Parking - there are big garages on campus to park in (you can find where to park on the UCD website and also find the cost of parking, etc.) In the city of Davis - weekend parking isn't bad. During the week its a bit busier and be aware that most parking in downtown Davis is limited to two hours on weekdays.

If you're coming from northern California - 113 rarely has much traffic at all. But if you come through Sacramento check google "Fix I-5", if your route takes you through Sacramento - parts of I-5 are closed on and off through out the summer due to a major construction project, some weeks its north bound, other weeks its south bound and you'll need to know what the alternate routes are.

Hey Oakland Mom, do you like Davis better than Oakland? I am from Oakland too!!! I live kind of near O-High.

Anyway, Amtrak is convient and the library to (cal's) library shuttle is super convient. I definatly am going to try to this fall for a raider game or two.

oceanpoet, We live in Woodland now and love it. (housing prices less up here than in Davis). We lived in Maxwell Park. My girls went to Tech. (They're both in the south for college). My son is in Pasadena for college though he's home for the summer. We were glad to get out of Oakland - too much crime in our neighborhood. And we were able to get a much bigger house up here. So I guess, yes, I like Davis/Woodland better than Oakland, though there are things I miss like the wonderful regional parks of the Bay Area. There are so few off leash places up here for my doggies.
And its been a little hard for my son, he really doesn't know anyone up here(we've only been here 5 months). He hasn't been able to find a summer job or many tutoring clients...

I see you're a poet - do you belong to any writing groups? I've been searching for a poetry group up here and haven't found one. (I'm a poet too).

Oh, well, back to the discussion about transportation...

What does everyone recommend for transportation to and from So Cal? Is there a train or just greyhound or plane?

@ Oakland: Yep, I'm coming from the Bay Area. :] Thanks for the advice!

-goes back to studying her old chem notes. D:-

Transportation to and from socal kinda sucks... when gas prices weren't so high (ie - last year) it was cheaper to drive if you had a car than to fly. With the price of gas now, it's about the same cost to fly Southwest as it is to drive.

You probably are only going to want to travel by plane or car though; getting to socal by train can be a real nightmare, especially because in most cases you'll have to go from a train to a greyhound back to the train, and sometimes to a bus again. And it takes longer than driving or flying. It might be a little cheaper but it definitely doesn't seem worth it to me.
