Is there any public transportation between Walla Walla and nearest, largest cities? As a parent, I can see renting a car to visit Whitman, but on a regular basis, how do kids get to campus after flying from out of state to Portland or Seattle?

I’d like to know that too! My D is starting this fall (from LA)

I’m pretty sure that there are shuttles that run on breaks between Whitman and Portland and Seattle airports. I read about it on their web site, I think. I live near Seattle and plan to have my S use the shuttle to save us the 4-1/2 hour drive over the mountains.

Found the link (last year’s schedule):

Here’s a thread from last year that might be helpful:

In short, there are a few options for getting into Walla Walla:
Fly into Walla Walla Regional Airport (via Seattle only)
Fly into a nearby airport and drive from Pasco (1 hour), Spokane (3 Hours), Portland (4 hours), or Seattle (4 hours)
Take the Grapeline (bus) from Pasco and/or Amtrak

As mentioned, Whitman runs buses to and from Seattle and Portland for major breaks. It’s also not uncommon after the beginning of the year to get rides with friends to and from major metropolitan areas (e.g. Seattle or Portland) and there is a pretty active rides email listserv to facilitate that as well.

In conclusion, while traveling to Walla Walla is kind of a pain, there are definitely ways to avoid too much stress. As one who has driven, taken the bus, and flown in and out of Walla Walla, I can say that with some planning, the trip is definitely not bad. Even the bus rides were far from hellish. ;)

My D used the campus shuttle to and from Portland during her first year. Since then she’s always been able to ride with friends to either the Portland or Seattle airport, usually spending the night at the friend’s house before flying out. She has occasionally flown home (to the Bay Area) from Walla Walla via Seattle. The price for that varies and is at times pretty reasonable.
