Transportation

I know the easiest way to get around the city is a bus, but how about to the airport, has anyone done it? I have to do it in July and don't know how long it takes so I don't know when to book my flight! Is there a website to see bus routes in SC? The more info you have the better. Thanks :)

Take a Metro bus from campus to the Metro Center in downtown SC. Then find the Highway 17 express lane and wait for a 17 express bus to come (usually comes every hour…sometimes every 30 min). Arrive at the Diridon Station in downtown San Jose and then there should be a bus from there that goes to the SJ airport.

decided to not get a ride from someone in SoCal?

No I am for the ride up there. But I need to be in vegas the same night

There’s actually no bus from Dirdion to the airport. It’s a lightrail for 10 minutes to a free airport shuttle.

The whole thing is a hassle, but definitely doable. It’s easier to find a friend with a car and offer gas money.

You can also do:
Highway 17 express to Diridon station
522 Rapid or 22 to Santa Clara transit center
Bus 10 (free metro bus) to SJ airport

I did that twice when flying to San Diego and LA for friends’ birthdays and I thought it was much faster than waiting for the lightrail.

Omg this is stressful. I’m feeding it already

Dreading* :)

Haha, it’s really not that difficult. You will find your way to the Santa Cruz Metro station VERY easily (basically all campus buses go there). Then at the metro station there is a lane for the highway 17 express (in front of that small taqueria). You take the Highway 17 to San Jose Diridon Station (everyone on the bus usually gets off here, you can’t miss it).

Cross the street towards the HP Pavilion. Take a 522 Rapid (huge red bus that has limited stops but VERY fast) or the 22 (regular bus, more stops). It will arrive at the Santa Clara Transit Center in 10 mins. There, you should see a bus labeled “10 Metro/Airport.” That is a free bus that will take you to the airport.

Websites to look at for schedules:
Scmtd.org (SC metro)
Vta.org (santa clara metro)

Total fare 1 way should be $6 ($4 for highway 17, $2 for 522rapid/22, Free for airport bus). If you plan on doing this all in one day (SJ airport to SC, SC to SJ airport), you can get a day pass from the 17 express for $8, so you can save $4.

How long does this excursion take? I’ve never taken public transportation. Lol

Another route but much more expensive is a taxi…

The Highway 17 rates are actually going to go up in June I believe. =/ It’ll actually be $5 for one way and $10 for a day pass.

^That’s actually true. I completely forgot he was trying to do this in July.

Highway 17 = ~50-60 mins.
522 = ~10-15 mins, OR 22 = ~15 - 20
10 = ~11 mins.

Then you got to factor in transferring from each of these buses and the scheduled times. It also depends if you are going on a weekday or a weekend.

If this seems too complicated, just go to Google Maps, go to public transportation, and for start type in Santa Cruz Metro, santa cruz, ca. Then destination is San Jose Airport, San Jose, CA. It will do all the calculations for you (except it will give you a little longer route than the one I wrote earlier).
