Transportation?

I was hoping to visit my friends at Duke University next year, but I wasn't sure what would be the best form (essentially the cheapest) form of transportation from Williamsburg to Durham?

greyhound?
amtrak?

Agreed. There’s an Amtrak station within walking distance of campus. It’s probably about a 5 hour drive by car.

Not to be Captain Obvious, but as Duke and W&M are overlap institutions, there are a fair number of people in your/your friends positions, that is, friends with students at the “other” college. On any given weekend, a student from one school is probably visiting a student at the other. So look for someone to share a ride with - that’s probably the cheapest way, splitting gas costs with the driver.

Greyhound and Amtrak are decent choices - for either, buying well ahead of time, and/or taking advantage of sales/discounts will save you some money.

If the connecting service was better, Amtrak would be a good choice as the stations on both ends are within walking distance of the campuses, and you can get round-trips for around $80 or less. Right now, though, the transfer times for trains in Richmond is too long. The good news is that service improvements are sloowwly occurring on Virginia routes, so keep an eye on:
