for first years, what are the ways to get off campus to go grocery shopping, go to movie theaters, etc.? are the charlottesville buses available for that or are they only for downtown?

also, are there any movie theaters near the campus?

The university bus system will get you to Barracks Rd shopping center. Or you could walk - it is a 10-15 min walk from Grounds. From there, you can take a bus out to Fashion Square mall. The free street car that stops in front of the Rotunda will take you to the downtown promenade where there is a movie theater and the [Pavillion for concerts. There are also concerts at JPJ Arena.

Another way to get out of town is to register for Zip”>http://www.zipcar.com/uva/learn-more?group_id=112326734&plan_key=uva_sponsored]Zip Cars - UVA](http://www.charlottesvillepavilion.com). There is a one-time $35 registration fee, then fees for hourly/daily rentals. Be sure to reserve your Zip Car well in advance because reservations go quickly!

Another tip: if you shop for groceries at the Barracks Rd Harris Teeter, sign up for a store card and show your student ID. Students get a discount (I think 15%) every time they show their ID.

Is the Barracks Road Shopping Center the one that has Panera Bread, Ann Taylor, BB&B, etc.?

Also there are 2 bus lines - the UVA buses which go to places like Barracks Rd (BB&B, Panera, 2 grocery stores, etc), the dorms, JPJ arena, etc - and the city bus lines, which are free? to UVA students? They run programs every now and then where if you show your ID the ride is free, not sure if this is currently going on… Those lines go to the mall (shopping mall), the downtown mall (hang out place with shops outside, movie theater), Walmart, etc. No bus goes to target as far as I know… The ride to Walmart is also ~45 minutes fyi.

Also there is a movie theater on grounds at Newcomb (student center, dining hall, near the bookstore) where they show popular movies for $3 – cheaper and no bus needed!! They also show artsy movies there, Rocky Horror, etc. There’s another movie theater in CVille which is artsy called Vinegar Hill but I don’t know how you get there on the buses if even…

ALL charlottesville buses are free to UVA students if you show your ID, so you can get to most shopping centers, as well as the downtown mall. The movie theater setup in c’ville is a little weird. There are a couple theaters – one on Seminole, near Seminole Square (on the bus lines), one on the downtown mall, one about a block from the downtown mall, and one a little off the beaten path. They basically split up the current movies that are out, each theater shows four or so. You have to plan ahead if you want to see a movie at a theater, but buses go to most (if not all) of the theaters. The Charlottesville Transportation Service web site has a pretty good map of all the bus lines.

You don’t really need to go off grounds to watch movies though, Newcomb Theater has movies a couple months after they come out in theaters, and that’s pretty much what I do to see movies. You can also grab DVDs from the Robertson Media Center (make sure you check it out, 3rd floor clemons) and watch them on the projector in a theater-style classroom if you’re bored :P

Vinegar Hill is downtown, on the corner of West Market and Mcintire.

Oh yeah RMC is a great resource – free blockbuster!! Who needs movie theaters? ;)
