transpotation for interviews for non-driver

Hi,

Hope someone can help.

I am helping my son to apply for boarding schools. we are from asia, do not have USA driver's license.

the schools we are aiming are - andover, exeter, st paul's, deerfield. and one more (not decided yet).

my question is how can we arrange for the transportation to go from one school to another?

we will land in boston int'l airport, and plan to visit 5 schools within 3-4 days in early oct.09.

any helpfil info is appreciated.

A Dad

I have driving in Europe with an international drivers license.
Not sure how you get one here but I went to AAA in my state and just filled out an app.
You can look into that.
When S was applying we saw alot of international families with a 3rd person acting as an agent/interpreterm. I am sure he or she would have been driving too. That could be an option also.

There are consultants who will take you to the interviews. Otherwise you can hire a car service, but it will be very expensive. Also, it will be impossible to see 5 schools in 3 days—they aren’t very close together and most schools only offer morning and early afternoon appointments.

if you would like to find a consultant in the Boston area, go to [Educational Consultants - IECAonline.com | Home](http://www.iecaonline.com) and search for Schools consultants in Massachusetts. Good luck.

It won’t be impossible to see 5 schools in 3 days. You could easily see Andover and Exeter in the same day, or St. Paul’s and Exeter, then Andover the next morning and Deerfield in the afternoon.

Once you’re in Boston, you can take the train to Andover. It only takes around 45 minutes.

You could also use Amtrak. Even if the station isn’t in the same town as the school you’re visiting, there are hundreds of stations and chances are that there will be one near the school and you won’t have to pay that much for a taxi.

Amtrak;

The hard part will be fitting Deerfield and Andover in on the same day, we tried it but got to andvoer late (long interview at deerfield + talking to coaches). So I ended up having to do an alumni interview locally.

The best would be to see SPS, then Exeter the same day. Then drive to Deerfield and see the school the next day. Then drove to Andover and see the school the following day. Andover is the closest to Logan so I would do that last.

If you are visiting Deerfield, visit NMH that day as well. They are within 30 minutes of each other.

And make your appointments soon if you want to get a schedule that works for you.

All of the schools are accessible via some form of public transit, but not if you want to see more than one per day (mostly because they are all on separate routes from Boston).

Andover - MBTA commuter rail from Boston North Station (45 min.) - about 10 trains per day
Exeter - Amtrak rail from Boston North Station (1.5 hours) - 4 or 5 trains per day
Saint Paul’s - Concord Coach from Boston South Station (1.5 hours) - about 10 busses per day
Deerfield - The best route is probably by wagon train, but there is a daily bus from South Station. The problem is that the outbound route is in the evening and the inbound route is in the morning. For practical purposes you will need a driver to visit Deerfield.

Leaving Deerfield out of the equation you could visit the others in three days without a driver (possibly adding in nearby places like Brooks, Milton, Middlesex, etc. by cab). If Deerfield is a “must see” then a driver will be an absolute requirement.

Thank you everyone. This is helpful info.

If we hire a driver/taxi, and can pay US$100 school 1 to school 2, is this a reasonable price?

should we hire a seperate taxi along the route (school to school) or hire one for all 5 schools?

Thanks again.

Hire separate taxis. If it’s really far, you could probably arrange a predetermined fee before you even leave.

There are several hours of driving distance between the schools. A taxi on a meter would quickly exceed a one hundred dollar charge.
You might try posting on the international students forum to see how other families handled the issue, whether for looking at boarding schools or colleges.

That’s what I was going to say. And you can’t control road conditions and weather, which may make the drive take longer than you have planned.

If you want a ballpark estimate of what it would cost for some of the trips via metered taxi (at least from Boston) try [Taxi Fare Finder - Estimate Your Taxi Cab Fare, Cost and Rates](http://www.taxifarefinder.com). Warning: The trip to Deerfield might be a bit of a shock. Andover/Exeter/SPS form a triangle with about 40-50 miles per side so travelling between them wouldn’t be cheap, but not nearly as expensive as the trip to north-central Mass (Deerfield, NMH, etc.).

To save money you could take a train to Exeter in the a.m. (station is 1/2 mile from campus), cab to Concord in the afternoon and stay overnight in Concord. In the a.m. you could take a cab to Andover and then take the train back to Boston (or a cab to another local school like Middlesex). The cab rides would probably be between $100 and $200 each (figure $3 per mile unless you can negotiate a lower rate). I would have recommended staying overnight at the on-campus Andover Inn, but it’s closed for renovations. Alternatively, you could reverse the entire trip and stay overnight at the Exeter Inn, which is just down the street from the PEA campus.

Thanks again everyone.

Padre13 - thanks for info on andover inn and exeter inn. This is helpful.

We changed our plan a little bit - we can only do 1 school on each day, and intent to stay one night very near to the school. So we will stay in Andover Inn, Exter Inn each for 1 night.

Does anyone know if there is a hotel very near to Deerfield and St Paul’s?

Still, arranging a taxi between schools seems a chanllege (too expensive!). Boston to Deerfield 121 mils, Deerfield to St Paul’s (Concord) is 100 miles, from Corcord to Exeter is 45 miles. anyone has any experiences in negotiating with a taxi driver/company to make it cheaper?

Thanks again.

Kli -

Not sure what your budget is but here’s a nice hotel near St. Paul’s: [Visit the historic Centennial Hotel, Concord NH](http://www.thecentennialhotel.com/)

I would also recommend this hotel which is halfway between Exeter and St. Paul’s:
[Luxury Inns in New Hampshire | New Hampshire Lodging | Bedford Village Inn, Bedford, New Hampshire](<a href=“Bedford Village Inn & Grand Boutique Hotel”>http://www.bedfordvillageinn.com/)

As far as transportation, I would suggest:
1.renting a car and driving yourself - as someone else suggested you can get an International Driver’s Permit before you leave your country.
2. Arrange for a car service as opposed to a taxi.
Here’s some suggestions in New Hampshire:
[Amoskeag Airport Service](http://www.skeag.com/)
[NH Limo: New Hampshire Limousine Company, Grace Limo, Is Your One-Stop NH Limousine and Ground Transportation Solution](http://www.gracelimo.com/)

I think renting a car and going yourself is a good idea. The taxi or car service option would be expensive. Please remember that if you take a Boston taxi to Deerfield, you would have to pay his fare home again. It is several hours drive, so he wouldn’t do that for free. You would have to pay for 2 round trips to Deerfield, or you could have him wait for you and take you back, but that would be very expensive too.

I think you can rent a car with your home country driver’s license. I have done that in other countries and had no problem. Good luck!

Ditto ny. Contact the rental car company to find out what you will need. My spouse and I have rented cars many times in Europe using our drivers licenses and passports only.

Thanks again everyone. Especially Padre 13.
We repalced Deerfield with Groton, and also added Milton. We can go to all these scholls via public transportation!

I know I’m late to reply, but if you are looking for an affordable hotel in the area, try Comfort Inn Concord, [Concord NH Hotels, Comfort Inn Concord Hotel near New Hampshire Ski Resorts, Pats Peak and Mount Sunapee](http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-concord-new_hampshire-NH019). Centennial is also a great choice, however a little more expensive.

hey kli some school may be able to pick you up from where you are, or some schools may actualy come to you. i have done a few interviews where i picked up an admissions officer at an airport and i did another one where i picked up an admissions officer and drove him to a hotel
