Trash reduction tips

Well sometimes there can be dangerous things like needles, but I think it is very valuable for kids to participate. Our family participated in a river clean up one time where we actually excavated an old unauthorized dump site. We were digging up stuff that had been dumped 50 years earlier. It was pretty illuminating for the idea of how there is no “away” when you throw something away.

We went hiking today along a short trail. Very scenic (will post pics someday in the future), but some people really shouldn’t ever feel the need to get outside in nature. If you can’t take your drink/lunch/snack trash back with you or put it in the nearest trash can, stay home.

We picked up several drink cans and various plastic items along the walk. (sigh) One of these was a Red Bull. The energy drink didn’t even give them enough energy to carry the can to the trash!

The other group that should stay home are those who feel it’s such an accomplishment they have to chisel in their graffiti for all to see that they “made it.” What a great job, completing a 0.6 mile trek!

I’ll add another group – people with dogs who are inconsiderate, who don’t keep them on leash when required and/or who don’t pick up the dog poop!

Does anybody else see the roadside “one shoe thing? We scratch our heads and are guessing it is maybe a teen prank to grab a friend’s shoe and throw it out the car window (?)

Or how about the pair of shoes tied together and thrown over a telephone wire. Those will stay there for years. I saw 2 pair yesterday while running which made me think of it.

Yeah., we get the one shoe thing. I never thought of it as a prank. Little kid shoe, probably easy enough for them to kick off and throw. Adult sized - I always figured someone was drunk lol.

I am strongly considering a Ridwell Box. It is a box like container for the front porch that is used to recycle items you can’t normally recycle. In my area (lots of people do this) they take batteries, light bulbs, clothing and a few other things on a monthly basis. Every month they also feature an additional item (so you can save them up). My thought is I wil start this in June after D and her family move closer to us so that they can “share” my Ridwell Box.

I understand it is not available everywhere. You have to go to their homepage Ridwell.com and enter your zip code.

This is just a little thing, but we have used cloth napkins for years even when our kids were younger. I have lots of colors and patterns of cotton napkins.

On Sundays I go to the bagel store to get H and I fresh bagels. I bring my gallon sized reusable bag and they put them in it for me.

I know these are just little things, but I think they help make a bit of a difference.

Every time I see this, I shake my head and wonder if the movie Wag the dog is to thank for this crap.

I’ve always heard that shoes over a telephone wire signal a gang or a drug house.

Sounds like a nice option, but thankfully I can recycle all those locally.

Re the shoes tied together I grew up near a military base and always heard soldiers used to do this when they got out of the Army and would toss their combat boots up over the wires.

Interesting. I could see that here. These were between a running trail and the back of a shopping center. Hopefully not, but could be

Great! Recycling these items is not possible where I live, thus the popularity of Ridwell.

You could probably team up with a neighbor(s) to share cost of Ridwell.

It’s pretty affordable, but we will have D and her family share with us.

Any recommendations where to buy cloth napkins. Currently we only have 3 green ones (grabbed from the Christmas box) and 6 spring print ones that match the Easter tablecloth.

I usually get mine from TJ Maxx/Marshall’s/HomeGoods.

My favorites I picked up at a high end grocery store.

Never heard of this. Love the concept. Would totally do it if they were in our area.
