Trasnsfer/merit based??? Anyone???

Hi,
was wondering if anyone knew if there are any scholarships for merit-based transfers from a community (junior) college???

i have come across a few but they all seem to be need-based

any advice? thanks!

I don’t know about ones specifically for CC students, but there’s a thread with some possible schools with merit for transfers:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/565769-transferring-up.html</a></p>

Also, here’s a website that for each school lists merit for transfers:

[MeritAid.com: Search Merit Scholarships, Academic Scholarships, Merit Awards - Merit Aid - Search](<a href=“Find Scholarships for College Students: Scholarship Database”>http://www.meritaid.com/)

Are you Phi Theta Kappa? They have scholarships, but I don’t know about the need factor.

yes i am a PTK member. do you know about how much they give out to a student (average)?

A lot of schools have their own merit scholarships for transfers and PTK members. In addition to applying for scholarships (check the PTK website), be sure to check the individual schools you are applying to.

I know that in Florida some of the public 4-year universities offer merit aid to transfers from CC, like this for the University of North Florida:

Florida Community College Transfer Scholarship
Amount: $2,000 (renewable)
Requirements: Scholarships are available to eligible applicants with an AA degree from any of the 28 public community colleges in the state of Florida. Awarding is competitive and based on academic merit and/or financial need, leadership positions, community activities, and availability of funds. Eligibility does not guarantee an award.

It’s interesting to note that these Florida universities don’t offer transfer merit-based aid not non-CC students - if you transfer from another Florida university or a private university, you’re more on your own…

I’ve never heard of a private university offering a transfer merit aid specifically to CC transfers, but that’s not to say that it doesn’t exist.

Generally transfer merit aid is diminished or non-existent at private schools. Your best bet is to find a school with good transfer need-based aid, like Vanderbilt, although if that’s out of the picture, you’re probably limited to opportunities within your state and if you don’t have those, then you’re out of luck since it’s doubtful a public university would give a merit-based scholarship to an OOS CC student.

Actually D is in the midst of transferring from CC to OOS Private U. She got transfer merit aid of $6000 and additional $3000 for PTK membership. We also got a small amount of need-based aid. Of course with private tuition ($$$) we needed every penny

Aid is out there, but much more limited for transfers than for freshman.
