Query - how would one get from the Providence Airport to New Haven via public transport, i.e. train, bus, limo service, etc.

The cheapest airfaire from Detroit to the New Haven area is into Providence, RI ($108 roundtrip) thank you Spirit Air, but other than renting a car I have no idea in regards to making it the last leg to New Haven.

New Haven train station is not walking distance to campus; per above they appear to have shuttles for Bulldog days, but do not normally (major flaw, have to take a cab)

Your best bet to get from Providence to New Haven is to rent a car. Have you checked the fares to La Guardia? There's a fairly frequent train service from Grand Central to New Haven. We live in metro Detroit and that's a popular route for students in the area. Daughter flies in to La Guardia, takes the airport shuttle to Grand Central and the train to New Haven.

This is a good time to make Hotel reservations. They fill up very quickly. The hotels around the University hike up their prices during bulldog days, beginning & end of the school year and Parents weekend.

We usually stay at the Marriott on Whalley Ave. It used to be the Holiday Inn till last year. The price has gone up since the name change, the quality remains the same. It has underground parking which is a huge advantage.

We tried the New Haven Hotel one time - didn't like either the place or the location.

I've heard The Omni is the best hotel around. It is also more expensive than the other options.

We haven't checked out the B&Bs in the area. Most of them don't include parking, and that can be a hassle.

Thanks for your input. We are also from the Detroit area, so your assistance has been very helpful in figuring out the travel arrangements. Spirit Air does have very reasonable flights into LaGuardia.

Although it is a TINY airport, New Haven does have one- Tweed. I know that US Airways or something like that goes into Tweed. You can get a connecting flight from Philly to get to New Haven. The airport is not far at all from Yale.

I would reccomend flying into Tweed/New Haven Airport if you can. It is generally more expensive, but the money I save on the trip from the airport to Yale is more than worth it. Not to mention the vast amount of time and stress saved by using Tweed. Delta and US Airways currently fly into Tweed from Cincinnati and Philadelphia respectively, and Northwest is considering starting service from Detroit.

The Study is the nicest hotel close to campus but it is priced accordingly. The Omni is my choice #2 and is only a few more blocks away. LGA is a great option going to campus but I would not recommend using public transportation through Grand Central Station to a high school student (and you certainly don’t need your parents at BDD). Even traveling with a parent this is a more complicated route to save the cost of the CT Limo or GO airport shuttles. Bradley is the closest airport with frequent flights but considerably more costly than LGA/JFK. Westchester County Airport (HPN) is easy to navigate and has cheaper car rentals but prices out similar to Hartford flights and has poorer public transportation options than the others. New Haven has a handful of deprtures daily requiring a connection which adds one more thing to go wrong with travel plans. If going in with a parent who can rent a car, traveling to PVD might make sense since the car rental will be cheaper than from a NY airport but understand no students would typically travel that route. Hopefully the New Haven airport will start offerring more non-stop flights and they have been talking about this for years.

Typically the cheapest and least complicated is flying into LGA/JFK and then taking Go Shuttle or CT Limo which will drop you off and pick you up at Phelps Gate. CT Limo is around 95$ RT for Yale Students. I believe you can get the same rate if you show your invitation e-mail. Links to Go Shuttle (formerly Prime Time) and CT Limo are at the following link.
