travel questions on school holidays

I have received a valuable suggestion- make plane reservations early for major holidays. As I launch into this project, I have a couple of travel questions.
1.Does the Rose Hill campus clear out the night before a holiday (for example Tuesday night before the Wednesday University holiday before Thanksgiving) or would it be very likely that my S would rather stay at school that night and come home the next morning so as not to miss the "night before a holiday" festivities on campus? Back in the dark ages when I was in school we had great parties that last night...
2. How long does it really take to get to LGA on the Ram Van service?
3. We will not have a class schedule until the end of August but fares are going up even now. What might a freshman expect as the last scheduled class of the day in the Business School?

Freshman year, pretty much everyone at Rose Hill, including Gabelli students, are taking core requirements and they cross matriculate. Exam schedules are given out fairly early by most professors. The campus empties out as exams complete and that varies from student to student. Honors students often have late exams and papers due.

For Thanksgiving, it depends on class schedules, but most have classes on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving and depart immediately after their last class, packed and ready to go. (Do some skip to make a flight? Yes. But be wary of doing that.)

The RamVan works on a set schedule and with sign ups. If all else fails, take the Metro North to Grand Central and then get a taxi, but that is expensive. Most kids do just fine with the RamVan. It can take up to an hour to get to LaGuardia depending on time of day, from what I know. Others may have more helpful advice. You also want to consider the security lines at LaGuardia to avoid any last minute stress and missing flights.

For now, its okay to just relax, as kids will work this out when they arrive on campus and get the scuttlebutt. Fares rise and fall and often good deals can be found on the internet. Also check JFK and Newark for comparison shopping. Sometimes boyfriends and girlfriends from the immediate community help out a lot with free rides to the airport and picking up! :-> So if that happens, don’t hesitate to ask. RamVan is very reliable. They don’t do pickups at LaGuardia, so you have to take a taxi either direct to Fordham, or into Grand Central and then hop the train.

Its all good!

My S is at LC but the one problem that I have heard about people booking flights early has to do with the final exam schedule in that you have to be out of the dorms 24 hours after your last final exam and so it totally depends on the individual’s schedule and class section.

Unfortunately, you are at least 6 weeks away from getting your S’s schedule to determine when his finals will be so I would hold off for now. Booking a Thanksgiving flight home for Tuesday night seems pretty safe though.

If you haven’t seen it, I’ve put the link to the academic calendar below (Gabelli undergrad is the same as Rose Hill). There are no classes the Wed. before Thanksgiving so leaving Tuesday night should be fine. My S will be a senior this year and he has always come home Tuesday night. Sorry but I don’t know the Ram Van schedule. The Christmas vacation is harder to plan way in advance because you need to get the schedule of final exams.

How much is a cab ride from LGA to Fordham? Around $40 or so?
