Just thought I’d throw out some tips we learned coming from the West Coast on a budget. My son will be a junior next fall.
Helpful site for booking flights - itamatrix.com - you can’t buy anything from this site but it tells you rates for all published fares - a travel agent turned me on to this and it is open to the public. Great!
Where to stay? Unfortunately, Tufts does not have hotels right near campus. One option we found is Waltham. It may feel out of the way but is an easy drive when you get used to it. Embassy Suites is there - nice with a full breakfast. I have yet to pay over $129 a night and have made 5 trips already, heading back in May! There is also a GREAT family style restaurant called the Chalet within 10 minutes - back roads, no real traffic - awesome and reasonable. UNO - pizza place, just up the road.
So you would need a car. CostcoTravel is consistently the cheapest. about $25 a day or so including tax.
Any other tips are appreciated!
*Chateau not Chalet. The post was supposed to be in parents forum - sorry.
Just returned from Jumbo Days. My daughter and I stayed at the Best Western Tria. It’s located 1 stop away from Tufts on the T.
We flew to Logan and caught the Silver Line bus to the redline at South Station to Alewife (no cost). We then walked with our roller bags to the hotel. It takes about ten minutes, you have to cross a bridge and then cross a 4 lane highway, (there are cross walks.) The hotel has a free shuttle, if you call from the T they will pick you up. We walked it during the day and used the shuttle at night. If you’re driving, they have free parking (as long as you book through them.) The hotel is located right next to a plaza with a Whole Foods, TJMaxx, a liquor store and a movie theater. There’s a Starbucks in the hotel building. (The hotel has a free continental breakfast.) There’s a Trader Joe’s and a Chipotle across the 4 lane highway. The free shuttle will take you to Tufts, Harvard and a bunch of other places. I would definitely stay there again.
We ate at the Painted Burro in Davis Square last night. Great margaritas and the fish tacos were yummy.
My daughter is an official Jumbo, she had a great visit!
