Travel to/from UConn?

Hi...looking for some input from current students and parents. We visited recently and fell in love with the campus. The biggest drawback is the driving (4.5 hours without traffic, closer to 6 with...) through NY and Conn...so can other OOS students and parents give some insight into the public transportation issue? I know there are trains from Hartford to Philadelphia, and there is a bus from campus to Hartford...has anyone done this? How long does it take and how difficult to navigate getting to train station from campus?
Thanks!
(also would love to hear what your favorite things are about the school that would make this ride worth bearing...)

I can’t really speak to your specific route, but we live in CT and my dd attends college in Maine, about a 4-5 hour drive, depending on traffic and weather. She used to take Amtrak home but they are just as bad as the airlines with their fare changes. She would always get stuck with crazy long layovers in Boston and we still lived an hour away from the train station in CT so it took more than 8 hours to do what would be a 4-5 hour drive. We found it simpler and more cost effective to just go pick her up until she took her car back with her sophomore year. Unfortunately, New England’s public transportation is the pits!

maryversity,

My DS is in his 2nd. year at UCONN and dates a girl from NJ, she has her own car, not sure if that is an option. You would just need to ask the school about parking. That said… We live in CT on the coast, about an hour away from UCONN. I’m not sure if there is any transportation out of Providance but call the school. If there is then your child might be able to take Amtrack to RI.

What do we love about the school???

The kids… I don’t think I have run into anything negative yet and we have been going up there for the last ten years for soccer games. Yes there are one or two bad apples in the bunch but that is every place.

The safety… From the layout of the campus and all that my son has said it is really safe. The school in the past had mega parties but that has really been crushed. Have some fact data on this since a friend of ours was with the State Police and delt directly with some things. He assured us the school is on top of things…and they are.

Medical Attention… DS used it twice and they were very good. Got some great advise on the medical.

The ice cream… Way better than PENN ST, next time you go make sure you stop by ad get some!!

Location… The school is in the middle of the sticks, the kids stay central to the campus. For a parent this is good, it keeps them out of the city. I’m a former NY city street kid I know the streets very well.

Overall… Our DS loves the school, although he is ultra consertivative he found his nitch. He got involved with a frat and is doing quite well. In regard to the frat we were a little worried but now that we know all it is actuclly a good thing. He lives in greek housing. For us we also love the school. I think we had two concerns regarding classes and after a call or two the staff made good on the issues. They have high expectations of these last two classes and I’m confident in saying they will have high expectations of the classes yet to come. My son said as hard as some of the classes are they “teach”. I told him just the other day :Son, just think you only have two year left after this." His reply (shocked): “Dad, that bumms me out, I’m already thinking about staying from my MBA, I really love it here.” That said it all for me!

Very happy with the school as a complete family!

I would not let the drive be a dream killer.
