Travel to UVA from California

My son is about to commit to UVA (so excited!!!). We live in California and I've checked flights into Dulles, Charlottesville and Richmond. Flights to Cville and Richmond all go through Dulles. Is there a shuttle from any of these airports that goes to UVA? Thanks for your help.

That 30 minute flight covers a 2 hour drive. Aside from when international students arrive (when the UVA Express picks students up at Dulles), there isn’t a regular shuttle between Dulles and Charlottesville.

Thanks Dean J. Is there a shuttle from either Richmond or Charlottesville? Just trying to figure out how he gets from one of the airports to school.

Direct service from Cville is not great. They are currently building DC metrorail service to Dulles Airport - I’m not sure when it will open. Once that connection is made, you can connect via Metrorail from Dulles to Amtrak stations that serve Cville, including Alexandria and DC’s Union Station. Amtrak also has service from Cville to the Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington Airport, which sometimes is cheaper.

The DC National Airport is also at a Metrorail stop.

On weekends and during breaks, there also is this bus service from UVa’s first year dorms to Richmond and to the Vienna metrorail station in N. Va.

Because so many UVa students live near Dulles Airport, it may be easiest to catch a ride to and from Dulles from another student during breaks.

There also are other bus services, including Greyhound from the Downtown Cville bus station to Northern Va. and DC.

Thank you for your very helpful and informative information Charliesch!

A cab from Grounds to the Cville airport will only set your son back around $25, it’s not far. He could also ask upperclassmen friends with cars to give him a ride - in my experience, students with cars are very generous with rides to those who come from too far away to bring their own.

Yes, there are regular flights from Chicago to Cville. I understand many students share a cab from the Cville airport back to UVa.

Our D is graduating next month and has always flown into CVille as opposed to Richmond or DC. You simply can’t rely upon your schedule syncing up with another student’s…way too much of a hassle. Plus, it was our experience from where we are (~20 hours away by car) that flights into CVille were actually cheaper assuming you booked early. Cabs are about $50 RT (to/from campus). The one thing I would strongly suggest is to always book earlier flights out of CVille. When D was a first year, her flight was delayed out of CVille. When she finally got to Charlotte, her connecting flight had just left so she was stuck until the next morning.

Thank you for sharing your daughter’s experience. I too have come to the conclusion that flying into CVille seems the best option. I appreciate the heads-up about booking early flights heading out of CVille to avoid missing connecting flight. Thank you everyone!

I had mentioned the Metro extension to Dulles. It is not projected to open until 2018, which probably means 2019. The Metro (Silver Line) extension to the eastern part of Reston is opening this year. That is not far from Dulles. Therefore, someone flying into Dulles could probably get an affordable cab ride from Dulles to the new Metro station, and then be able to connect to Amtrak stations, the weekend bus to Cville, etc.

In case anyone need to know the " exact " taxi fare from UVA to DC airport, it is $160.00 plus tips, one way.
My older daughter & 3 other students took a taxi in Feb to attend a conference.Amtrak was closed at that time during the big snow storm.
