Travel voucher to admitted student events

I have received an e-mail inviting me to attend an admitted student event. I am however an international student. Does Bates offer travel vouchers for these events.(Travel voucher may be a bit misleading. does Bates offer a full free return ticket?)

You can ask admissions. But I think it would be very rare to offer full fare for an international student’s accepted visit expenses.

Let me ask my D what the international kids she knows did. But I have to agree, I don’t know if they will cover that. I will post again if I have some news.

So my D asked several international friends if they visited Bates after being accepted. One visited before acceptance. The others never visited Bates until they arrived on campus last August. Honestly, they are all really happy. I believe the international students are housed in a couple of dorms, along with domestic students, and maybe arrive a little earlier? Not totally sure about that. I remember D telling me early on that she wished she was in one of the international dorms, because they all seemed to be having a great time. I am pretty sure that Bates doesn’t fly in accepted international students, simply because it’s logistically very impractical, unless you are Canadian.

I suggest for any college you get accepted to, have a good look at the college page for accepted students, because I am sure you will find some info just for international students. I saw some of your other threads, and I don’t know where else you have got in, but all of those colleges will be happy to connect you to students or parents who can give you all kinds of information about the school and the area. Call the admissions office and ask who can give you more information. I also know that Bates has special events and programs just for the international students, and that they run shuttle vans to the nearby shopping area during orientation so that you can purchase everything you need for your dorm. No doubt most of the other colleges do this too.

Re: housing for international students. For housing his first year, my (caucasian) senior son chose Clason, a chem-free residence (one of the Victorian houses) for about 30 all-first-years. He was very happy. He said Clason was known for its mix of “introverts, internationals, and nerds.” He was across the hall from a young woman from Nepal, with a fellow from Afganistan a few doors down. Dean Reese held several events there for international students early in the year. Son also spent a Thanksgiving break on campus one year, and the holiday meal was prepared and served in the new Center for International Education. He had a blast. Since then, it looks like Clason has been renovated or at least spruced up. Just one option.

Yes, my D was very envious of the kids in Clason. She said that house seems like a lot of fun.

Plenty of domestic kids don’t visit a college before they deposit. One of D’s friends is from NYC. He applied ED. He never set foot on campus until move in day. Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith.
