Has anyone traveled abroad through McGill? How was that experience like?

I had a friend who went to spain for a semester. He loved it but the experience really has little to do with McGill itself, it more depends on which school you choose. In fact, I believe he went through a program with Syracuse and had to make sure it was OK with McGill. It was, but they didn’t accept any of his credits when he came back. McGill is stingy on things like that. The process to organize it was a pain in the ass for him I remember, took over a year. It all depends on how early you start working on it and talking to people, what program you are in (for some you can’t afford to leave because you have too many required classes that can’t be taught abroad), and where you plan to go.

I was never impressed with semester abroad or year abroad programs. I heard about kids at an elite school in the US (non-Ivy) spending a year living in a university-owned castle in the Loire Valley of France. Sounded like a great (and expensive) vacation. At McGill, as an American I was already “abroad”! Unless the experience abroad somehow directly fits into your academic program, I don’t see the value of it. Short term intense programs like the one described in the article above however have a lot of value.

That’s just my opinion though.

i agree with you. as an american, i dont see the need to study abroad when i go to mcgill next year. however, do you have an opinion on taking a semester off to do an internship…for example im doing poli sci/intl develop. and I am interested in doing a fall state department internship instead of going abroad or studying at mcgill…any opinions on that?

So does anyone have an experience of being an American student studying abroad?

see my post, american friend went to spain… but like was already mentioned, montreal is abroad already. it is like north american’s version of europe with all the international flare and population.
