I'd like to do some travelling with future friends at McGill next year. Depending on when winter break is, I'd like to go to Carnaval in Brazil...or otherwise Brazil or Europe during the spring/summer.

Is that a feasible goal? I mean, money and time obviously comes into play, but are students usually up for that? Of course it depends on the individuals, but for instance, none of the members of my graduating class seemed to be really enthusiastic about attempting to go anywhere.

As far as money, is it hard to get a little job on the side during the year? I'd realistically want around 1500 to travel comfortably. I'm thinking that since I'll be 18, I could perhaps try getting a bartender job. I've looked into it here in the states, and apparently people will take a course and get some experience, and then apply. I wonder if it's the same there.

IIRC, you can't work off-campus without a work permit, you can't get a work permit if you have not been studying full time for the past 6-12months or so.

Also, Christmas break is a one or two-weeks break, so travelling won't be fun. Easter break does not exist, so no travelling at all.

I love how McGill gives you like no breaks. A day off for Canadian Thanksgiving, a week or two off for Christmas and a week off for Reading Week which usually ends with you taking at least one midterm.

Hm, so basically a work permit would come pretty much after that first year. I'd like to get an internship for the summer, do you think that getting a work permit would be an issue?

As for the breaks, yeah...I hear they don't have many during the year. But, we do get a 4 month summer, so...no complaints about that.
