Is it safe for a student to travel from Stanford to SF by him or herself? (taking buses, the caltrain, and stuff like that), even late at night? Of course you would always need to be cautious, but would it be unwise to be doing this alone?

While I'm no authority on this, Caltrain seems to be very safe, but I don't know how safe the SF station is or what kind of neighborhood it's in.

Taking CalTrain back and forth between Palo Alto and S.F. is safe. Roaming around the City (never call it "Frisco") alone is NOT safe, especially for someone new to the area.

Just get a group from your dorm or living situation together. It should be relatively easy to find others on campus to go places with. Invite people who have been to the City before and know their way around.

oh its very safe. I did this alone when I came to Admit Weekend. Except, I went farther than SF ...to Oakland and thats a pretty bad area and I'm still living.
all you do is take the marguerite to the palo alto caltrain station, then take the CalTrain to the the Millbrae CalTrain/Bart station. Then take whichever Bart you need to get to wherever you want to in the Bay Area.
