I plan to visit the Gabelli School of Business on the 19th for admitted students day. Only thing is I am having a terrible time finding out how to get there. I don't want to drive because I want to have the experience of taking the train and subway.

I live in New Jersey (south) and the closest train station to me is Lindenwold.

The easiest way to get to the Fordham RH campus is to take the Metro North from Grand Central Station in Manhattan to the Fordham Road station. It takes less than 20 minutes and the station is right at one of the entrances to campus.

The closest subway is the D. It is about a half mile walk down Fordham Road to campus.

Do you know how to get yourself to NY?
I live in PA, but my daughter takes NJ Transit to get to NY. You can drive to the station in Trenton, Princeton Junction or Hamilton (there’s a big parking garage in Hamilton). I don’t know if there is a train closer to you but that’s where we go. That takes you to Penn Station.

I think I remember my daughter one time saying that there is a bus that goes to and from NY from somewhere in Cherry Hill?

The Bolt Bus stops in Cherry Hill. It’s $10 to New York (give or take-- the ticket price varies slightly by schedule.) It lets you off in front of Penn Station. You can easily Google map public transportation.

Jersey Transit is excellent to PennStation. You can take the D or 4 subway up to Fordham Road, but then have a fairly long walk past the concourse down to Fordham’s gates. I agree its better to get from PennStation over to Grand Central and grab the Metro North to Fordham Road station, right at Fordham’s gate. Most Fordham students take the Metro North to get into the city and return. Its clean, safe, and runs until 100am.

There are kids who commute from New Jersey to Rose Hill. But not many. Most kids from Jersey are residents at Rose Hill. Plus it enhances the college experience. Nearly 100 percent of kids from south Jersey/Philly suburbs definitely live on campus.

I highly recommend the BOLT bus. We live in DC and my daughter and I have recently made many trips to NYC! We love taking Amtrak, but it’s so expensive. I was surprised at how clean and efficient the BOLT bus was. Ours went straight from DC to NYC. So if you can get to the one in Cherry Hill, that would work. Then you just have to cab it to Grand Central…or it’s not a bad walk if you have time and want to experience the city. I also grew up in NJ, and I know Jersey Transit has quite a few options.

If you take a train or bus to Penn Station, I highly recommend riding the 2 subway from there to Pelham Parkway in the Bronx. The elevated part of the ride is much more interesting on the 2 than on the 4, and the 12-SBS bus that stops at the Pelham station (free transfer with your MetroCard) will take you to the Belmont gate (1 stop away) or the 3rd Ave gate (the next stop after that).

Whatever you do, take Moynihan’s advice and stride into Fordham like an emperor–on an el–rather than scurrying in like a rat in a subway. Seriously: do not take the D train unless you like dim train lighting, grimy platforms, and sad, silent commuters.

Wow guys thanks for all the help!!
Here’s what I figured out…

I live 15 min from Philadelphia where my grandparents. So I’m going to sleep over their house Monday night and Tuesday morning take the 5:45 train from 30th st station to Trenton terminal to NY Penn Station. From Penn station I planned to take the B subway. But like some of you said I would rather take the 2 train (scenic route lol). Where will the 2 train leave me off at and how would I get from there to fordham?

About the bolt bus: i have heard of it before and it sounds like a great option but the time the Bus would be going into the city would not be good at all with traffic.

The way I figured out would only cost me about 35 bucks round trip! I also looked into Amtrak and that was a total rip off. But please do get back to me about the 2 train I would like taking that a lot.

I’m doing this all by myself so I’m a little nervous as to what direction to walk when I get into penn station/Trenton terminal to get to the next step lol. So if anyone can help with that that would be great! Thanks for all the help I’m so excited!

Taking the D train after arriving in Penn Station (you could take the B because you’d be there during weekday rush hours, but it’s a slower, local train in Manhattan) would involve taking the northbound A/C train or Queens-bound E train from Penn and transferring to the northbound/Bronx-bound D at 59 St., 125 St., or 145 St. (from the A/C) or at 7 Av.–53 St. (from the E). The D would drop you at Grand Concourse and Fordham Rd, and you’d walk about ten minutes down colorful hill to Fordham’s 3rd Avenue gate. It’s a very interesting walk, and a very urban one indeed.

Taking the 2 train from Penn would be a direct ride to the Bronx. The Pelham Parkway station, where you’d want to get off, is a 15-20min walk from the other side of Fordham’s campus, but it takes much less time via bus (there’s a stop just to the west of the station, on the north side of the westbound lanes of the parkway). You’d take the 12 select bus (n.b.: select buses require you to swipe your MetroCard at a machine at the bus stop to get a ticket before boarding), and two stops later you’d be at the same 3rd Av. gate you would have gotten to from the D.

The A/C/E and 1/2/3 stations are on opposite ends of Penn Station, but the signage is good enough to get you to either one.

If this is your first time on the NY subway, you will probably get lost, so make sure to leave time for that.

Walking from Penn to Grand Central takes about 15min. If there’s a train that stops at Fordham that leaves GCT 20-25min after your arrival at Penn, it’s probably your fastest option.

Can’t help with the Trenton transfer, sorry.

Are you sure it’s only going to be $35 round trip?
Because from Trenton to NY is $15 one way…so that’s 30 right there. And round trip from Philly to Trenton? How much is that?

Do you know how to buy a metrocard for the subway?

Yes it’s only $15.50 from Philly to penn station and $15.50 back. The subway from penn station to Fordham is $2.75 there and $2.75 back. So $36.50 round trip.

No I don’t know how to buy a metro card lol I’m new to all of this I was just going to pay when I got to each station.

Anyone know about taking the 2 train from penn station to fordham ?

Here is what my daughter said:
If you’re not taking MetroNorth, you should take the D train to Fordham Road. Unfortunately you can’t take the D from Penn Station. You can walk to Herald Square (34th and 6th, one or two avenues east depending on where you come out of Penn Station) or you can take the A, C, or 1 train to 59th Street- Columbus Circle and transfer to the D for free.

As for finding your way through Penn Station, it’s tough because there’s no way of knowing which track you’ll come in on. My best advice is just to follow the signs. Make sure you’re always going uptown.

MetroNorth would be more expensive though it will get you much closer to campus. If you’re not familiar with the area, that’s my suggestion. But I absolutely understand wanting to go up as cheaply as possible.

About the metrocard- there are machines near the subway, that look like ATMs. It’s a touch screen thing. Try to have smallish bills because I think it gives change in dollar coins, so you don’t want to have a ton of them in your pocket. You can buy a card that will cover you both ways.

After you buy your card, you scan it at the turnstile and walk through.
I am never quite comfortable getting around NY, but I find that New Yorkers are usually very willing to point you in the right direction.
