Traveling TO and FROM UCSC WITHOUT a car.

does anyone whose home is far away *(and i mean hundreds of miles away!!!) go to ucsc by train or some other EFFICIENT transportation besides a car??

i live in LA and don't know how i'm going to be able to get home for breaks and vacations (because going is not as big a problem, my dad might rent a car to drive me up there for the first time).

While I was on the tour at UCSC, the tour guides were from SoCal, and they both mentioned that taking the bus IS NOT the best way to go. They highly recommended going on an airplane because i think 5 hours on plane > 13+ hours on a bus with MANY pit stops.
The ticket prices scared lots of students away, but in reality if you order early they will be cheaper and also how many times do you plan to go back and forth... I mean really.

Fly southwest - as low as $45 each way. I just bought tix myself last night.

5 hours? isnt it like 1 hour to la?

yea 1 hour flight
5-7 hours driving (depending on pit stops, where in LA, and how fast you drive)

Also, Greyhound from SC to LA is about 10 hours

it took me 6 hours to drive up to santa cruz from los angeles...

well if you wanna fly...you gotta go to san fran and stuff...:/
i don't know what i'm doing too. sigh

You do not need to go to SF. If Santa Cruz doesn't have its own airport, then just head to San Jose, which is about 30 min away.

go to san jose airport.. waaay better

It's 6 hours from SC to LA. I've done the drive several times on the way to Palm Springs. It's a very easy, simple, and relaxing drive. Never taken a bus to LA, but a bus would probably go the long way up the coast so it hits all those big cities. I definitely wouldn't recommend that.

Fly into SJ or Monterey if you want to do that. I dunno how much it costs for tickets, but if you compare it to 600 miles of gas, it's probably relatively the same.

You can fly southwest from San Jose to LAX or Burbank for as little as $45 each way.

hey thanks a lot! greyhound is offf my list now. sounds like a hell of a trip. i never actually considered going by plane, it never occured to me till now =).

well say i do take the plane, how would i get to school?

no one here mentioned taking trains... so that's not possible then?

Some people definitely use greyhound, it's easy enough, and reliable - always there if you didn't make other travel plans.

The train doesn't go all the way to LA - you can train from San Jose to Bakersfield, then amtrak tosses you on a bus down to LA. I think it's between 8 and 10 hours total?

Getting between SC and SJ has a few options:
-find a friend with a car, tons of people are doing this around finals/breaks

-highway 17 express. it's a metro/amtrak combined service bus that runs from the downtown metro center to SJ Dirdon CalTrain station for $4 each way. there are a couple options between the caltrain station and the airport (taxi, public transit) i can get more detailed if you really want.

-SC Airporter. door to door van service from the airport to wherever you're headed, for somewhere in the neighborhood of $40.

Oh, also OPERS runs the "Turkey Express" - which is a chartered bus from campus to specific drop offs in LA and back for thanksgiving break. The drop off locations are college campuses, UCLA, valley college, and another CC I can't remember. That always sells out fast, so check it out if you're interested. The run the same thing for winter break under a different name.

sorry for any confusing wording, I haven't slept much lately...

how do ppl manage finding other ppl going to the same destination?? cos thats a lot easier.

i think i'm stuck with the airplane for now cos its the most efficient and cost almost as much as the train, but the problem is just getting to the airport.

how much is the greyhound??

thank you so much, you've been a great help. are you still going to be attending sc??

You find friends w/cars, friends of friends, ride board in c8 dining hall, livejournal, facebook, etc.

Getting to the airport isn't as big a deal as you think it is.

I've never taken greyhound, I'm told it's between $80 and $100.

Yup, I'll be a senior in the fall

hey berceuse, we should def talk more if we wanna get back to LA during holidays. I live in LA and I want to find more people in case my friend and I decide to drive back or something. Which college are you gonna live in?

I should look more into the plane thing.. San Jose...

hi degeneres,
i'm going to be in porter, i dont have a car so i dont know how i'd be any help to you but it's be great if we can be road buddies lol.

hey kewkiekid,
do you have facebook??

I need a road buddy also. I cant drive [working on it] and my parents want me home every weekend.. so I might end up taking the metro thingy that goes to san jose diridion. Does anyone know how I can find out if someone lives near where I live [Morgan hill] ?

berceuse: we can def be road buddies. where do you live in LA?
