I am a freshman from Illinois who will not be attending SOAR but would still like to plan and purchase my plane ticket/research how to get out to Cal Poly. Does anyone have any experience with this, as far as the cheapest and easiest way to do it? What major city is the nicest to fly into and travel to SLO? If I am carrying two suitcases and a backpack, is this reasonable?

Are you near Chicago? You can fly to San Luis Obispo from Chicago via San Francisco or LA. Otherwise the closest major airport is Santa Barbara. Considering the hassle factor of transferring from an airport to a bus or train to SLO, flying straight there is probably worth the extra cost.

From the Bay Area, the best public transportation option is the Amtrak train (or bus). It takes about 4 hours and costs around $35.

wheezy,
my son will also be a freshman coming from chicago…flying RT from ORD(ohare) to SBP(san luis obispo) is about $500!!! you have to either stop in LAX SFO or PHX and the only airlines to fly into SBP are united and USair …i did book his flight to move in this way however just cause i thought it was easier…but i also am researching the best way to get him back and forth for xmas etc…(he’s not going to soar either) i would love to know if there is any transportation that could take u from cal poly to a large airport where there are more reasonable fares…LAX? SFO? i know there is amtrack and greyhound but they dont seem to have a stop right at the airport! santa maria(SMX) seems to be a closer airport and i found rt flite(stopping in la) for like $380 but then i have no idea how you would get from cal poly to santa maria and back from santa maria to cal poly…let me know what you find out!!! i can only research it for so long before i get frustrated!! so i have no solutions yet…

Here is a shuttle service that offers daily trips to Santa Barbara and LAX from SLO.

I think there are some more compainies that offer a similar service. Try google for something like “central coast shuttle LAX” or “california coast airport shuttle”.

Hey I’m from Chicago and just finished my first year at Cal Poly SLO. I’ve flown out of O’hare to either Arizona or LA or San Francisco and then taken a connecting flight to SLO. I’m not sure about ticket prices, but I know that the earlier you buy them, the better deal you will usually get. I heard it can be slightly cheaper to fly out of Santa Barbara and there is a shuttle called the coast flyer that makes several trips from slo each day. If you have any more questions, feel free to private message me!

In theory, the RTA buses as far south as Santa Maria. I just have no idea if they go anywhere near the airport down there. In fact, I wasn’t really aware that there was an airport there.

thanks for all the replies, this is similar to what I have been finding when searching for flights. RLW123, what is your son going to do about registering for classes? SOAR posts information online?
