traveling to yale from boston/new york

If my family and I are booking a flight to La Guardia (NYC), what's the best way to get to New Haven from the airport? Train, cab, car?

Or if we decide to book a flight to Boston instead, is it easier to take a greyhound, Amtrak, or just drive to New Haven?

How long would either drive(s) be?

Thanks!

The train from Grand Central in NYC to new haven is like 15 bucks or something around there. Amtrak from Boston probably has really high rates. By car it's about 2 hours to La Guardia, but it's also pretty dependent on traffic. Your best bet is probably train, I would say. The drive from Boston's longer, something like 3 hours usually. So yeah, I'd say take a cab from La Guardia to Grand Central and then Metro North to New Haven.

Amtrak leaves from Penn Station.

The Metro leaves from Grand Central and I think has more departure times. Grand Central is a beautiful train station and is much nicer than Penn Station.

Cab or bus from LaGuardia to Grand Central and then train fares up to New Haven. Depending on how many of you there is, it might be cheaper and more convenient to rent a car. Whenever I go to Yale, I fly into Hartford and rent a car. Is this an option? It's only about 45 minutes away from campus.

Westchester County airport is less than an hour from Yale. Rental cars at both Westchester and Hartford tend to be cheaper than at JFK/LaGuardia. At Westchester, they are right outside the exit (no shuttle bus). At JFK, it can be a bit of hassle to pick up and return car.

Providence, RI is another airport worth checking if you are going to rent a car. AMTRAK is also available near that airport.

US Airways flies right to New Haven. Sometimes a good option, since cost of car/train, etc. is eliminated.

Connecticut Limo is another way to get from LaGuardia to Yale. Can take upt to 3 hours.

Train prices vary. AMTRAK is usually more $$ than MetroNorth. Train fares vary by time of day and local (many stops) vs. express status.

Boston airport is a good 3 hour drive. I would only choose that airport if you want to visit Boston, or if you get a super cheap rate.

The other options aren't really necessary... Take the new haven line from grand central to New Haven, and Yale's campus is only about six blocks outside of the station. Lots of taxis are available at the station.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone.

Will we need a car for that weekend to help move stuff in (eg. we buy stuff at Wal-Mart and need to haul it back). Or Is the local bus system good enough, if there is one?

For move-in days, absolutely get a car!

It's crowded on move-in days, so parking can be tricky. If you can't find a spot on the street, there are some nearby garages.

If you ship goods via UPS, they will be there for you to pick up by Phelps Gate (old campus where most freshmen live). Several UPS trucks park there for a few days.

Yale usually provides handouts with directions to the local IKEA, Home Depot, Target, etc.

If you don't want to rent at the airport, it is possible to rent a car right in New Haven. Hertz will pick you up at the train station, and they have a little office in New Haven. I believe National and Budget have outlets on the edge of campus, too.

Just a caution about UPS delivery to Yale: Yes, your boxes will be on a truck parked along the street for several days---however, don't send anything via UPS you are going to need immediately. It can take a few days for them to find your boxes among the hundreds sent.

Given that there will be multiple travellers and their staying three days to help you move in, I'd definitely NOT take CT Limo or the train since you'd each have to pay fares. Hartford, Westchester, Providence, New Haven or White Plains are viable options. Rent the car at whatever airport you use -- cheaper and more convenient than to pay fares to get to New Haven and THEN rent a car.

If you use the airlines' websites, they bundle car rental packages that are sometimes a steal. Last time I was in New Haven (5 days) my car rental cost was only $105 for all five days! I used NWA and they bundled me with Budget, I think. $105 would be less than ONE person's round trip fare using CT Limo.

CT Limo is good for when you travel back and forth for holiday travel.

slightly off topic - but relevant.

If you are traveling because you will be a freshman this year - Congratulations and welcome!

Our DD waited until she received her residential college assignment, the she and her then future roommates (now close friends) communicated about what they would each bring, minimizing shopping once they were there.

Because we were traveling by car, she purchased a futon and some additional plastic drawers. Other people brought microwaves (ubiquitous but illegal), small refrigerators, etc. Then, after they were all there they took a group road trip to Target with another mom and dad.

Good luck and if you need a COMPREHENSIVE packing list, pm me. I didn't create it, the mom who did is out of my league in terms of organization!!
