Travelling in VA

Hi guys (my first post^^)

I'm travelling to Richmond next week for the Richmond Scholars Interview day. I'm an international student (from Vietnam, fyi), and this is my first time in the states - pretty excited, but slightly worried.

So, the Interview day will last from March 16 to March 18. My flight back will be in the morning of March 19. At the moment I'm planning to use my March 18's afternoon to travel to Lexington, VA to visit a friend (who's attending Washington & Lee).

Do you guys know what would be the best way to travel there?

I checked with the Greyhound website and seemingly there's no bus straight there. I emailed a taxi company (Deb's Taxi) and learned that the cost will be around $700 for the round trip -WAYS too expensive.

So, is there any other option that is less costly but is still fast enough (I only have one afternoon :( )

Thanks a lot!!

Pretty exciting way to make your first visit to the United States!

Unfortunately, Lexington is pretty hard to get to from Richmond. There’s really no public transportation to there from Richmond. Maybe you can rent a car, but you probably are not old enough and it is not easy to drive over the mountains from Richmond to Lexington. Another option would be to have your friend check Washington and Lee’s “ride board” to see if you could hitch a ride with someone coming from Richmond that day.

It would probably be easier for your friend to come visit you in Richmond. Your friend can probably use connections or knowledge to find a way to get to Richmond.

Enjoy your first visit to the United States. If I had an afternoon free in Richmond, I would probably go check out the Virginia state capitol, and do a walking tour of the historic downtown. As the capital of the old Confederacy, there are a lot of interesting Civil War sites.

Richmond to Lexington is 2 to 2.5 hours drive straight over on interstate 64. We drive it all the time going to UR. There is bus service to Charlottesville, about 45 min. away, but not on to Lexington. See if your friend can meet you in Charlottesville or even Richmond! And the “drive over the mountains” is not as daunting as it sounds; easy drive, pretty views, no winding roads, just a rise up in altitude! Pretty country!

Have a nice trip and welcome to the USA. Hope your interview goes well.

In the end I couldn’t make it to Lexington due to some unforeseen problems, but still I really really really appreciate your helps!
