any particular brand that you'd recommend for winter season in nyc?

north face jacket and a fleece vest

but that doesn't look east coast and professional =(

Hahaha! I love this thread.

Wait until you get to New York to see what you like. There are gabillions of stores that will be selling all the winter clothing during the early fall. You won't need winter coats until late November at the earliest.

H&M is an amazing and cheap store to go to, but I don't know if they sell trench coats.

trench coat is for wet weather. It hardly keeps you warm

does that mean the sternies all wear them? Because I heard that they are always wearing their suits

jh:

You heard wrong!

wait so does that mean the tension between Tisch and Stern doesn't exist and Tisch students don't take over the Gould Plaza for filming, either?

why doesn't north face look east coast? I see a lot of people in NY wearing them. But you're right, it doesn't look professional, although it keeps you warm. If I were you I would wait till I got to NY before I bought one.

jh:

Again you are sadly misinformed. As far as I know kids from all the NYU schools get along well. My suitemates (2 rooms sharing a common bath) last year included 2 GSP, 1 Steinhardt, 1 CAS and 1 Stern. We all got along great. Three of us are staying together for sophomore year.

Northface,Ugg Boots,abercrombie...should have applied to Lehigh

18 year-old in a trench coat...you'll be mistaken for a flasher in Washington Square Dude...I don't think hip young professional men in the city wear trenches...my old man is 45 and won't be caught dead in a tan trench...where you from????

to salem1

so what DO "18 year-old hip young professional men in the city" wear then?

Now, that's not necessarily true, but you'd probably have to go the Burberry route for a "professional" trenchcoat (hip, I don't know). Pretty much any plain black wool coat will do you just fine for the winter.. but yeah, take everyone's advice and wait for sales.

Me, I just go for the down knee-length coat and act smug when it's 20*F outside and I'm all toasty on my morning commute. Since looking "professional" for me involves flipflops in the summer, it doesn't make much difference anyway~

"18 year-old hip young professional men in the city"

To Guinness for best oxymoron!

I didn't quite expect this thread to become more than one page when I started it...

JH...I assume you want to look like a "well-Heeled" business STUDENT right? Not so much like an 18-year-old business man... Not like Alex P Keaton?
Why not get a hip (yet classic) warm coat and Buy a vintage camel-hair or black cashmere coat (maybe a trench for warmer wet weather...but give it an edge) I'd stay away from anything burberry, looks like you're trying too hard (again unless it's vintage cause then you can salvage your street cred with an off hand "oh this....it's vintage) Me.....I like me a man in a super soft vintage cashmere coat!

That said, The H&M suggestion (maybe Bannana Republic) for modern-looking men's outerwear...plenty of classic stuff there (I think that's what your aiming for right?) I imagine most guys in beat up pea coats and down

thanks for the advice.

last but not least, I suppose I can now safely assume that the "hipster" label on (majority of the) NYU students is true

Are you sure you don't mean an overcoat? I think overcoats look better than something as long as a trench coat if you're going for that pre-professional look.
