trichotillomania

Has anyone here heard of trichotillomania? It's supposedly a disorder in which people persistently pull their hair out and often have bold spots as a result. Most of the people with trich enjoy pulling their out.

My friend from school just revealed that she has it and shes depressed about it. :(

I knew some one who did it two years ago. Kinda scary, but she got help and is all good now.

Wow, it's crazy that you brought this up now, because I was just thinking about this.
I know that I probably don't have trichotillomania, but I worry myself sometimes because if I'm nervous or if I'm concentrating on something (like a test) or even if I'm bored I'll automatically pull my hair out. I don't even think about it, I just start doing it.

It gets really embarrassing because I'll be in History class writing an in-class essay and I'll be just sitting there pulling my hair out and then after the fact there's a bunch of stray hairs floating around my desk and my hair is all frizzy, haha.

The reason I was just thinking about it was I just finished an English homework assignment and near the end of the assignment I started pulling out my hair and now I've got hair on my keyboard and my desk...

...sorry if this post was too weird/graphic/whatever...it's just worrisome to me :(

Canucker-

Oh don't worry! I can see similar activities in my friend and I want to learn about trich so that I can help my friend out. I just don't know what to do or say. Can she get better too?

My best friend from middle school has trich. She's had to have two surgeries so far because they had to go in her stomach and remove the clumps of hair. Luckily her hair is really thick so any hair loss wasn't ever noticable.

Okay, my friend eats the hair follicles but not the hair, so she probably will not need the surgery

Eats hair follicles? Is that even possible?

Yes, you pull the hair out and if you do it a certain way, there will be a little milky white sticky bit of tissue on the end. On the tip is a vlack dot. My friend has told me all about it. She said that if it weren't for the follcicle, she probably would not pull. But as stated by sugababi, some people have hair balls that require expensive, dangerous surgery.

Here is a picture of a preserved one:

I have known a few kids who had bald spots due to pulling their hair out, I assume this is induced by stress? Eating hair is icky though ><

sigurros- (hey cool ive listened to them!)

Actually most people do not pull their hair out as a result of stress. Rather, hair pulling creates stress. My ffriend liked to pull he hair out and she says it feels good. Yes, it is hard to understand and I don't quite grasp it myself. However, I know many others do this.

Here is another photo that portrays one pausible result of trichotillomania. People with this disorder do not neccessarily pull from only their head, but sometimes from other areas of the body.

Thrichotillomania is so sad :(

Ouch.....?
