Hey I was wondering if I even have a shot at transfering to Santa Clara for the winter quarter in 2007. I'm a freshman at Arizona State University - Barrett's Honors College and was accepted last spring to Santa Clara with a pretty nice scholarship. I decided to attend ASU for family problems and because I'm only paying $800 this year; however, I'm 100% sure a big university is not for me and I miss the small Jesuit communities that Santa Clara offers. Here's the tricky part -- too many high school seniors accepted their acceptances for fall 2006 and Santa Clara says they won't accept transfers for winter 2007. Has anyone ever heard of a school bending their rules? My highschool is a Jesuit college preperatory in Phoenix, AZ, which gets probably 15 guys into the school every year (it's all male). I'm having my counselor who knows a couple admission counselors there talk to them, I was already admitted in the past with a nice scholarship, I went to a Jesuit highschool, I already know of two current freshmen who's room mates decided to move out and live at home (meaning bed space that won't be taken up until next quarter), and the only reason I couldn't attend the school this semester is because of family issues that have been taken care of. Do you think all of these pluses can in any way outweigh such a big negative like the school claiming not to take any transfers?

you should tell them ur situation or even call them and ask the counselor or the adcoms =)

I think your hs counselor calling them is the best approach. If they can't make exceptions for this winter, then you can make it through the year and apply for next fall.

FWIW, my S was also accepted to SCU as a freshman with a nice scholarship. When Tulane phased-out his major after Katrina, he applied there among other places. He was accepted again, but no sign of that scholarship :(. He chose to go elsewhere, but if the scholarship $$ are important to you, either you or your counselor should ask whether they give merit awards to transfers and what the criteria are.

Your reasons for transfer are quite valid. So, if SCU doesn't open their doors for you for this winter on an exception basis, consider applying to a number of possible transfer schools. Make sure you take advantage of the Honors College to get to know a prof or two who can write you good recommendations.
