Hello all!
I am currently in the [scholarship] application process, and I am wondering which websites to avoid/which I am good to use?
Just a few websites I am familiar with…
Niche, CollegeBoard BigFuture, Scholarship Points, College Xpress, Scholarship Owl, UNIGO…
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!!
Hi Charger2020. It’s difficult to say which sites to avoid because some may be a mixture of valid scholarships and scams. I personally liked to limit my use of these ‘search engine sites’ you mentioned, however, there can be legitimate scholarships sprinkled throughout them. My preference is to go directly to sources offering the scholarships instead. Try ‘Googling’ some associations or foundations related to topics where you think you’d eligible for a scholarship - this is my tip to many students and they love it. Also, here’s a quick article I wrote on how to tell if a scholarship is a scam or not. Of course, there are always exceptions, but it should get you started! Hope this helps.
@scholarshiptips I read the article, and I think I got myself into the hole your talking about. I’m trying to unsubscribe from the spam, but it seems to just come back in diff ways…
I am sorry for the delay & sorry to hear that! Hopefully you’ve had some luck since on clearing out your email. I actually ended up creating a new email after the process because there were just too many scholarship scams to keep up with! If you want some more scholarship advice, there’s a webinar at www.scholarshipschool.org. There’s a pitch at the end but you still get a BUNCH of helpful information (i.e. what would have kept us from those scams). Good luck with your search!
Use unroll.me to clear the spam.
Honestly, I’ve never run across a “scam” scholarship, ever. But I’ve run across plenty of scholarships that aren’t worth the time or effort (sweepstakes, giveaways, essay contests, competitions with no essay component at all, etc.)
Just gotta use the resources out there to find what you can. Make another email account to sign up on those sites with, if you want.
