Trinidadian=Caribbean=Black on CommonApp?

Hi there!

My mom is from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, but, her ancestors were mostly Indian (her grandmother was half white). On the CommonApp, Caribbean is under Black. Since I do not categorize myself as Asian, I checked "Black-Caribbean." Am I wrong in doing so?

You’re Indian. There are also many people of Chinese origin in Trinidad. They don’t check a box indicating that they are black. They are Asian with a caribbean background. You would be correct in checking black-caribbean if you were of African origin and were from Trinidad.

I agree. Your nationality would be Trinidadian however, your race is Asian.

Narissma,

It seems like you are fighting through an ethnicty crisis. Only you and you only know to which group you most relate to.

In an earlier post you said:

"I have a bit of a dilemma, however. My dad is from Pakistan, and my mom is from Trinidad, which means that on my college application (on Common App, that is), I would check off “Asian (Pakistan)” AS WELL AS “Black (Caribbean).”

In this post you said:

“My mom is from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, but, her ancestors were mostly Indian (her grandmother was half white)”

You can decide from the Trinidadian Group to which your Mom most closely relate.

Then I suggest you read the Race in College Link.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what one can select with regard to race/ethnicity On the Common APP, so after reading the above, you should be able to select one or two where you truly honestly belong.

Good Luck.
